Linear vs. Exponential Function challenge: Students decide whether they would want $100 per day for 31 days or a penny a day and double the amount pennies for 31 days. Eye openers!!! Great discussions on the importance of investing!! Knowledge is Power!
Great way to show students that algebra is a tool for important decision-making. Also a great way to introduce wealth generation through investing versus working for paycheck.
@Sneffleupagus Do both. I teach concept all the way through—then memorization is the very last phase of learning multiplication. It’s still important to be able to retrieve it quickly for higher level courses.
@Sneffleupagus Sorry but too many kids don’t multiply efficiently these days. Something went wrong in elementary. Rote memorization should seal the deal once students have learned the concept.
@Mathowitz @LieslMcconchie@ItsAMrY I agree. It depends on the learner as well. Some students learn the steps first and then get an understanding through application. Other students want to know the application and or concept first and then follow the steps because they understand why they are doing it.
