2026 Sports in Kansas 5A Girls 🏀 Player of the Year: Jenna Schmeidler, Hays
While some may tend to overlook Western Kansas basketball, Sports in Kansas doesn’t. Over the last four years, three players from the region have cracked our Top 5 All-Classes lists, Taryn Sides, Talexa Weeter and now Jenna Schmeidler, who does it as just a sophomore.
Schmeidler led Hays to one of its best seasons in decades, including a trip to the state championship game and a one-point finish from a title. She delivered in big moments all season, including a 33-point performance in the state semifinals against Shawnee Heights.
The 5’7 guard averaged 19.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.5 steals per game while setting a school record with 537 points. She shot 44 percent from three and an incredible 93 percent from the free throw line, numbers that may have ranked among the best in the state.
“We had an incredible season and accomplished many goals,” Schmeidler said. “We went undefeated in our conference and made another trip to the state tournament and had our best finish since 1995. We’re looking forward to making another run next season.”
Schmeidler has already built an impressive resume early in her career, leading Hays to a 47-3 record over two seasons with back-to-back undefeated WAC titles and state tournament appearances. She is a two-time WAC Player of the Year and has consistently delivered on the biggest stages.
“Over the last four years, we’ve had multiple players from Western Kansas prove they belong at the highest level,” said Chet Kuplen of Sports in Kansas. “Jenna Schmeidler is next, and to be doing this as a sophomore makes it even more impressive.”
Playing for head coach Len Melvin, who was the 2025 Sports in Kansas 5A Coach of the Year, Schmeidler has helped elevate the Hays program to new heights.
With her production, efficiency and ability to take over games, Schmeidler established herself as one of the top players in Kansas this season, regardless of class, and one of the brightest young stars in the state.
