Better business decisions don't come from luck!
They come from experience, discipline and knowing what to look for. When pressure hits, hesitation costs you money but so does rushing.
The sharper your judgement, the better your decisions become - around people, cash, customers, risk and opportunity.
That is what Foundation 52 is built around.
Not theory and not motivational fluff - just practical commercial lessons learned over more than 50+ years in business.
Lessons designed to help you recognise problems earlier, think more clearly and make stronger decisions before the cost of getting it wrong gets expensive.
If you run a business, manage one, or are trying to build a better one, have a look at Foundation 52 - Old Skool Business Rules. https://t.co/ZoxcACmMrf https://t.co/ImbcHqUiNk

The phone call no business owner wants!
WHEN THE BANK MANAGER CALLS, IT’S USUALLY TOO LATE TO START THINKING ABOUT CASH FLOW.
Most business problems don’t arrive with a warning siren - they build quietly. A few invoices run late, margins get tighter, stock sits too long, expenses keep landing and the bank balance starts moving the wrong way.
Then the phone rings. And suddenly, the conversation you should have been having with yourself weeks ago is being had with the bank manager instead.
Cash flow pressure rarely appears overnight. The warning signs are usually there - the advantage comes from seeing them early enough to act.
Good operators know their numbers before someone else starts asking questions about them.
That means watching cash weekly, chasing overdue money, protecting margin, controlling commitments and making decisions early - not when the account is already under pressure.
The time to fix cash flow is before the bank manager calls.
That is one of the lessons behind Foundation 52 - Old Skool Business Rules. Practical business rules learned through more than 50 years in the commercial trenches not theory.

28% OF SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS CONSIDERED CLOSING.
That is not a throwaway statistic.
In the 2025 Small Business Conditions Survey, 28% of more than 1,100 Australian small business owners and decision-makers surveyed said they had considered closing their business in the previous 12 months - with another 30% saying that they were worried their business might close in the following year.
I understand why these numbers matter because I have been through periods in business where the pressure seemed to come from every direction at once. Rising costs, tight margins, cash-flow pressure. admin overload, difficult decisions and the constant question - what do I deal with first?
What helped me was getting back to the fundamentals - clearer numbers, disciplined follow-up, better systems, earlier decisions and tighter control over the things I could actually influence.
Over more than 50 years in business, those lessons became rules. Many were learned the hard way, and many are now captured in my e-Book Foundation 52.
There are no guarantees in business, and no book can remove every problem. But practical experience can sometimes help you see a problem earlier, ask a better question or make a steadier decision.
If business feels close to the edge, get back to the fundamentals. Discover Foundation 52 at https://t.co/rY74lBDdmJ

GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. AND IF YOU CAN’T… MAKE SURE YOU GET IT RIGHT THE SECOND TIME.
Mistakes happen and every business gets something wrong occasionally. A missed detail, a faulty repair, a misunderstood instruction or a product that doesn’t perform as expected.
Customers understand that.
What customers struggle to understand is having to come back again… and again… and again for the same problem.
My recent car servicing experience reminded me of a very simple business rule: Your first opportunity is to get it right. Your second opportunity is to restore the customer’s confidence.
If a customer has to return because something wasn’t done properly, the second visit should become a priority. Fix it, own it, check it properly and make absolutely certain the customer doesn’t have to come back a third time.
Because by then, the problem is no longer just the original fault. It will then become a question of trust, competence and whether the customer wants to continue doing business with you at all.
Customers don't expect perfection - however, they do expect businesses to take responsibility when something goes wrong.
Mistakes may cost you money. Repeated mistakes however, cost you customers.
REMEMBER: GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. IF YOU CAN’T, MAKE DAMN SURE YOU GET IT RIGHT THE SECOND TIME!

We thought we were doing well!
Back in 1990 I had a stake in a manufacturing company that we thought wasn’t failing - we just didn't know it at the time. Everyone thought things were going well. Sales felt good, activity was high and the team was busy.
Then we looked at the numbers. Margins were falling, conversion rates were slipping and costs were climbing.
The numbers told a completely different story.
This is lesson #5: KPI's Are Essential. If it's not measured, it's not managed.

Comfort is dangerous.
Obstacles are not the enemy and ‘easy’ doesn’t make your stronger.
Challenge and obstacles drive invention and growth – whereas comfort weakens capability.
Pressure sharpens thinking and necessity forces progress.
We need challenge to evolve.
FOR SOMETHING TO GROW, RESISTANCE IS NECESSARY!
That's Rule #72 and it took me years and plenty of mistakes to learn it.

IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!
The rules that keep a small business alive are rarely complicated. The problem is that when things get busy, owners can lose sight of the basics. Sales are coming in, people are flat out, the phone is ringing - but none of that guarantees the business is actually healthy.
First up: cash flow. An invoice might say you made the sale, but the bank balance tells you whether you can pay wages, suppliers and rent when they fall due. A business can look profitable on paper and still be under enormous pressure because the cash arrives too late or gets trapped in unpaid invoices, stock or unfinished work.
Then you need to know your numbers. Not vaguely. Not once a month. You need a clear view of what is coming in, what is going out, what is overdue and what commitments are about to hit. A simple rolling cash forecast can tell you more about the immediate health of your business than a glossy report that arrives weeks later.
Next: protect your margin. Revenue means very little if every new sale creates more pressure. Underpricing, uncontrolled discounts, rework, extra site visits and jobs that soak up labour can quietly destroy what looked like a good deal. Sometimes the best commercial decision is to reprice the work - or walk away from it.
Then there is discipline. Follow up fast. Keep your word. Document everything. Put your terms in writing and then invoice promptly when the work is done. Chase overdue money without embarrassment. The businesses that survive are usually the ones that make good commercial habits routine rather than optional.
And watch the warning signs. Cash pressure, slow-paying customers, growing stock, unfinished work and shrinking margins rarely appear out of nowhere. The signs are usually there - the advantage comes from seeing them early enough to do something about them.
Small business success is not about having one brilliant idea. It is about doing the important things consistently — cash flow, numbers, margin, systems, follow-up and accountability.
Simple rules. Hard-earned lessons. And the difference between staying busy and staying alive.

YOUR BUSINESS SHOULD NOT NEED YOU or YOUR TOP TALENT EVERY MINUTE OF THE DAY.
TALENT (including yours) WILL BURN OUT. SYSTEMS WILL KEEP PRODUCING.
You can be talented, you can be experienced and you can work harder than everyone around you - but if your business depends entirely on you or your top talent sooner or later something gives.
That is one of the hardest lessons in business.
Talent might get you started, hustle might get you momentum, but systems are what allow a business to keep functioning when you or your top talent is tired, distracted, under pressure or simply not there.
Too many business owners are carrying the whole operation in their head. Every decision, every follow-up, every client issue, every sale.
That is not freedom - that is a bottleneck.
I learned these lessons over decades of running, fixing and rebuilding businesses - and many of them cost me a lot more than the price of a book.
That is why I wrote Foundation 52 – Old Skool Business Rules.
52 practical business rules built from experience, mistakes, pressure and commercial reality - not theory.
And right now, Supplement I is included FREE with Foundation 52, giving you another 26 business rules as part of the package.

Anyone can copy your offer.
The rule I learned too late - #80.
Few can copy trust, systems, and longevity, remember that short term sales create fragile businesses. You need to create more than just the sale of today.
Defend your position – defend your niche and your market presence.
Create and build your defensive ‘moat’ or moats.
SHORT TERM SALES CREATE FRAGILE BUSINESSES.

Your feelings are not a business strategy.
It is important to understand that emotions change whereas facts don't. When sales are down, when pressure is high, or when uncertainty appears, the numbers tell the real story.
Feelings create reactions. Data creates decisions.
Hope is not a KPI.
The best operators don't manage from emotion - they manage from evidence.
Feelings fluctuate. Numbers don't lie. Decide on facts.
MOST BAD DECISIONS START WITH EMOTION.
That's Rule #93. It took me years and plenty of mistakes to learn it.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE BUSINESS ADVICE? ‘NEVER QUIT.’
PERSISTENCE ISN’T ALWAYS A VIRTUE. SOMETIMES IT’S DENIAL.
Business owners are constantly told: keep going, never quit, push through, stay persistent and most of the time, that advice sounds good.
But there comes a point when persistence can become bloody expensive.
I’ve seen operators keep pouring money, time and energy into a product, a strategy, a client, a project or even an entire business simply because they couldn’t bring themselves to admit: this isn’t working anymore.
There is a big difference between having the courage to keep going and being too stubborn to change direction.
Sometimes the strongest commercial decision you can make is to stop, reassess, cut your losses and move your resources somewhere they can actually create value.
Quitting the wrong thing isn’t failure - refusing to face the numbers can be.
That’s one of the lessons you learn after enough years in business - persistence matters, but so does knowing what is actually worth persisting with - don’t confuse determination with denial.

Train Your Clients!
What you tolerate becomes the standard.
The rule I learned too late - #94.
It is important to understand that your clients are training you - but you also need to train your clients.
Every late payment accepted, every unnecessary exception made, every boundary ignored teaches people what is acceptable.
The best operators set expectations early. They communicate clearly, they remain professional, and they enforce standards consistently.
Because respect is not automatic - it is taught through what you allow and what you don't.
Set boundaries early because what you allow becomes the standard.
REMEMBER THAT EVERY EXCEPTION BECOMES A FUTURE EXPECTATION.
That's Rule #94 - and it took me years and plenty of mistakes to learn it.

Flatness is a warning sign!
Action creates motivation, not the reverse!
Feeling flat is a signal that routine has dulled your momentum. Drop your established patterns and change your pace.
Action shifts emotion and resets your personal ‘drive’ - movement restores motivation.
Interrupt inertia and stagnation early.
EMOTION FOLLOWS MOVEMENT!

Volume hides problems.
Margin is a strategy and margin reveals the truth - 'busyness’ does not create profit and high sales do not guarantee profit.
Profit from healthy margins is the real scoreboard.
Plan for and protect the application of your approved margin.
Sell smart, not with desperation.
REMEMBER THAT BUSY BUSINESSES STILL GO BROKE!

The Power of Association!
Who you spend time with will determine your ceiling!
Your environment shapes your standards. People around you will influence your beliefs and behaviours.
High performers lift expectations - poor influencers lower them.
Mix with eagles and you soar - mix with rodents and you are left to scrabble among the detritus.
WHO YOU ASSOCIATE WITH, DETERMINES YOUR TRAJECTORY!
