Police Chief Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo has announced that the Tourism Protection Subdivision will now operate directly under his office.
Chief Inspector Christina van Dunem Dafonsech, a veteran officer, will lead the unit.
Shikongo also said he has consulted his legal team on ways to expand the operational jurisdiction of the Windhoek City Police beyond the cityβs borders.
The move, he said, is intended, in part, to enhance the protection of tourists and citizens.
Speaking on crime and public safety, the police chief said he does not want to continue receiving reports of robberies, road accidents, and fatalities, particularly involving tourists.
He said that crime should not become part of Namibian society and called on both the police and the public to invest in other priorities instead of allowing it to dominate national attention.
The Tourism Protection Sub-Division will focus on preventing criminal activity affecting tourists and supporting national efforts to maintain public safety.
