Devastated about Gary’s passing this past weekend. He was not only a coauthor but a mentor and friend, like a dear family member really. What a loss for me personally, as well as for the profession and for the world. 💔💔💔
RIP my friend. You always had such a big heart and your willingness to help anyone was unwavering.
We will miss your candid humor, your scientific sharpness, and your big heart @GaryCharness.
Still surreal to me that I was awarded the Pinanski Prize for excellence in teaching today at @Wellesley Commencement #wellesley2024 Congratulations to my fellow winners Alla Epsteyn (Senior Lecturer in Russian) & Sharon Gobes (Assoc. Professor of Neuroscience)!!🎉@WellesleyEcon
Gary Charness, one of the most prolific experimental economists, has passed away.
He was a terrific researcher, a gifted teacher, and an irreverent free thinker.
Despite not publishing any papers before his 50th birthday he published over 100 articles.

When I was feeling frustrated that my research had stalled after giving birth to my son prematurely, he urged me to be kind to myself. I will forever be grateful to have been his student.”
You are already so missed, Gary.

I am in disbelief that Gary is gone. I will never be able to fully express the impact he had on my life and career. Here is a small snippet from a letter I wrote about his role as my mentor:

“I cannot say enough to fully articulate both the depth and breadth of the impact Professor Charness has had on my career. He is patient, kind, understanding, brilliant, funny, and wise. He treated me like a colleague from the first time I met him.

We lost a true pioneer today. Rest in Peace Danny. While our work did not always agree, I always felt that I received a fair trial with you. We will all miss your brilliance, vision, and wisdom.

Historically, much of the gender gap in earnings could be explained by differences in education and occupational choices. However, this year’s economic sciences laureate Claudia Goldin has shown that the bulk of this earnings difference is now between men and women in the same occupation, and that it largely arises with the birth of the first child.
