I write to you with regard to the seizure of the British flagged vessel the Madleen by Israel on the High Seas.

This was plainly an illegal act.

The Madleen was on a lawful humanitarian aid mission. It was not armed. It was not in Israeli territorial waters and had no plan to enter Israeli territorial waters. It was planning to enter Gazan waters where Israel is the occupying power, but that gives Israel no power to block humanitarian aid in Gazan waters.

The blockade of Gaza is an illegal act of collective punishment.

The legal statement on protection of lawful UK shipping which was made about the Houthis, must also apply here to Israel. If not, I should be fascinated to hear why not.

I also want to know whether British military assets on or operating from nearby Cyprus were monitoring the illegal Israeli attack on the Madleen and why they did not intervene.

Also as Israel signaled this attack well in advance what diplomatic representations were made to the government of Israel, both before and after the attack.
