remember when you'd log in and it was just your friends? like actually your friends. not influencers, not "people you may know," not a stranger's political opinion algorithmically selected to make you angry enough to keep scrolling.
the whole thing used to be what are my people up to. now it's what does the machine want me to look at for 40 more minutes. the friends are still in there somewhere, buried under six ads.
and the weird part is we all know. everyone i talk to knows. we open the app, feel worse, close it, open it again 20 minutes later. it stopped being social years ago. it's a slot machine with a comments section.
the thing i actually miss isn't posting. i don't want to post. i want to know my brother went for a run this morning. i want to see that my friend landed in tokyo. i want the group i went to college with to have a place that isn't a whatsapp thread of 400 unread messages about nothing.
none of that needs an algorithmic feed. none of that needs strangers. none of it needs to be content.
i've been building something with a few friends for the last while trying to get back to that. small groups, your actual people, and instead of posts it's just... your life, quietly shared with the ones you chose. steps, trips, habits, where you are if you want them to know, nothing if you don't. no algorithm. no discover tab. no strangers. no ads, ever.
called it Circles. pre-launch, ios first...probably. if any of this resonates the waitlist is https://t.co/NHp10YoJIV . and if it doesn't genuinely, i hope you find whatever gets you off the slot machine. life is too short. peace.
