Our Ecology and Education teams recently joined forces at the 2026 Hamilton Children’s Water Festival, connecting with more than 900 students over three exciting days of hands-on environmental learning.
At our Aqua Invaders station, students discovered the impact invasive species can have on local ecosystems through interactive games, activities, and real-world examples.
A big thank you to the @cityofhamilton for organizing another incredible event

In Eastern North America, Purple Martins rely entirely on human-made homes to nest and we’ve rolled out the welcome mat! Nesting structures have landed at our wetland projects at Fifty Point and Saltfleet Conservation Area, helping to grow a nesting trail from Hamilton to Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Every nest helps! With swallow populations declining, these homes are a small but mighty way to support local wildlife.
HCA is proud to announce a transformational milestone for the future of Saltfleet Conservation Area
Thanks to the incredible support of the Hamilton Conservation Foundation and a remarkable gift of $6,075,000 from Heritage Green Community Trust, the Saltfleet Conservation Area Wetland Restoration Project continues to move forward.

Just the thought of ticks can give the heebie jeebies, but don’t let that deter you from enjoying time outside. With that said, it is still important to be smart about ticks and the risk they pose.

Restoration work is underway today at Merrick Orchard in Dundas Valley Conservation Area. HCA Ecology staff are completing habitat management work to help control invasive species and support birds and wildlife in the area.
Wildlife sweeps were completed before mowing began, with active nesting sites identified and marked for protection. Visitors may notice restoration equipment and signage in the area today.
A big thank you to the Trans Canada Trail for supporting our annual litter cleanup projects through the Trail Care Fund Grant for the past 7 years! 💚
This year, we collected 250+ pounds of garbage, including three shopping carts and a broken bike. Our community volunteers went the extra mile at this cleanup event, hauling out garbage from under footbridges and clearing the way for natural ecosystems to thrive this spring.

Eastern Hemlocks help make places like Dundas Valley feel cool, quiet, and wild. But a tiny invasive insect called the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) is putting these important trees at risk.
To help protect these forests, HCA has begun treating priority hemlock areas in Dundas Valley Conservation Area and is actively monitoring local forests alongside the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Buckthorn may look harmless, but dense patches of this invasive species can choke out native plants and trees.
Recent restoration work at Eramosa Karst Conservation Area, has freed this native shagbark hickory tree from a thick wall of buckthorn… and the before-and-after photos say it all.
Projects like this help give native species more space, sunlight, and opportunity to thrive for years to come.

Every ticket helps fund trails, habitat restoration, and environmental education right here in our community.

It’s #WildlifeWednesday and we’re featuring spring peepers 🐸
Have you heard this sound at night?
That high-pitched chorus is spring peepers calling… one of the first signs that spring has arrived. Our team is out surveying frogs to better understand wetland health and breeding activity.
