Look, talking about being a nationalist or unionist when the whole government is controlled by just one clan lol, can you not see the hypocrisy in that? How can you talk about nationalism or patriotism when one or two clans are dominating the government of Failed State of Somalia?

Meanwhile, other people are being pushed to the margins. When resources and opportunities are concentrated in the hands of a few, and the top government positions are dominated by the same clan, how can you expect people to believe there is genuine equality or unity? If only two clans are the only ones who can become President of failed state of Somalia while other clans are excluded from meaningful representation, then talking about nationalism, patriotism, or unity rings hollow. You are very delusional if you expect people to believe what you’re saying.

The Cuqdad Mentality

When the cuqdad mentality became mainstream and shaped Somaliland’s ruling-class politics, Somaliland paid dearly and was humiliated in ways its enemies could never have achieved alone.

That is part of the reason Somalia’s flag and administration can now be found inside Somaliland’s claimed territory: because this mentality repeatedly pushed people outside the political mainstream simply because their political positions differed even when those positions later changed.

But when the same story comes from within, suddenly it is different.

No tears. No finger-pointing. No “Xabashi crying style Wayne Wayne Wayne !”

The irony is painful.

👉🏾 Tuur advocated a “loose federation” with the South—Somalia.

👉🏾 Egal, in 1991, proposed that Britain make clear it would not recognise a northern state—Somaliland.

👉🏾 Silanyo, in March 1991, proposed “a transitional government in Somalia.”

Yet all three later became presidents or leading figures of Somaliland.

And today, someone who at some point opposed Somaliland is quickly labelled “Faqash” sometimes as a convenient way of hiding everything else behind the label.

But when the same political history belongs to your own side?

Suddenly, history becomes complicated.

And the comment section makes the real issue even more obvious:

A: “Gadabuursi are coming back because of Ciise.”

B: “But there are also Isaaq coming back.”

A: “Oh… right. I forgot. Let me think.”

😂

That is the tragedy: when the principle changes with the qabiil, Somaliland not only loses territory it is humiliated, while every defeat is portrayed as a defeat for one particular group, even though the borders belong to the country as a whole.

That is the real cost of cuqdad.

A new book examining Somaliland’s long-standing pursuit of international recognition will be available in Washington, D.C., during the evening gathering between the President of the Republic of Somaliland and the Somaliland diaspora community in the United States.

Written by Dr. Mohamed Osman, a retired physician and public health specialist, The Unrecognized Republic: Somaliland’s Diplomatic Battle for Statehood examines Somaliland’s case through historical, legal, diplomatic, and strategic perspectives.

The book also explores Somaliland’s geopolitical significance in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, including the strategic importance of Berbera and the wider regional competition involving Djibouti, Egypt, Türkiye, and Israel.

For members of the Somaliland diaspora attending the presidential gathering in Washington, D.C., copies of the book will be available at the event.
