My new article, "From Eurocentrism to Sinocentrism? Echoes of the Chinese Model of Development in the Non-Western World," has been published in The Rest: Journal of Politics and Development. @therestjournal

The article examines whether China's rise represents an alternative model of modernity and development to the Western liberal paradigm. Through a comparative analysis of Vietnam, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela, it argues that while many governments selectively adopt elements of the Chinese model, the emerging international order is likely to be multipolar rather than simply shifting from Eurocentrism to Sinocentrism.

@mustafa_tetik ile birlikte yürüttüğümüz araştırmanın sonuçlar çarpıcı. Akademik bağımlılık çoğunlukla, merkezdeki ülkelerin çevre akademilerine dayattığı bir ilişki olarak ele alınır. Türkiye örneği, merkezin dışındaki kurumların kendi bağımlılıklarını yerel düzenlemelerle nasıl ürettiklerine ve kalıcılaştırdıklarına güzel bir örnek teşkil ediyor.

Yani, kapılar yalnız dışarıdan tutulmuyor, içeriden de kilitleniyor.

ÜSDİK, üniversite sıralamaları ile dergi indekslerinin birbirini beslediği kapalı devreyi anlatıyor. Üniversiteler sıralamalarda yükselmek istiyor. Sıralamalar önemli ölçüde yayın ve atıf verilerine dayanıyor. Bu veriler ise uluslararası ilişkiler disiplini açısından Anglo-Amerikan akademik sisteminin ağırlıkta olduğu Web of Science ve Scopus gibi veri tabanlarından alınıyor. Örneğin; makalemizin verileri toplanırken yapılan taramada Scopus'ta Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkiler kategorisinde yer alan 651 derginin 251'i İngiltere, 101'i ABD merkezliydi. Aynı listede Türkiye'den 4 dergi yer alıyor, hiçbiri de Türkçe makale yayımlamıyordu.

Üniversiteler, bu indekslerdeki yayınları atama, yükseltme ve performans ölçütlerinin kalbine yerleştiriyor. Akademisyenler de meslekî gelecekleri için çalışmalarını bu mecraların önceliklerini de dikkate alarak biçimlendiriyor. Böylece sıralama arayışı indeks bağımlılığını, indeks bağımlılığı da sıralama arayışını güçlendiriyor.

Makalemizdeki veriler, bu mekanizmanın Türkiye’de ne kadar derin bir ve ektili bir şekilde kurumsallaştığını gösteriyor.

New publication!

My new article, “No Compromise with the ‘Great Satan’? Anti-Westernism and the Ontological Limits of Reconciliation in U.S.–Iran Relations,” has just been published.

I argue that anti-Westernism has become a constitutive element of the Islamic Republic’s regime identity—raising the domestic and institutional costs of diplomatic compromise.

The article uses ontological security theory to explain why reconciliation can remain fragile even when material incentives for cooperation exist.

Importantly, I do not argue that Iran alone caused the conflict or that the 2026 Iran War was inevitable. Rather, I examine how regime identity, mutual security concerns and contingent strategic choices interacted to narrow diplomatic options.
