Shocking report on abuse in Home Office accommodation from Diane Taylor.

I was invited by a London Borough to inspect a hotel in their area used to house asylum seekers. Lunch arrived in individual plastic boxes with a few scoops of something unrecognisable & a few cold chips. There was a huge functioning kitchen but when asked if they could be allowed to cook their own meals instead, were told no. I've always wondered who has the contract to supply the 'food.' I've always wondered who owns the hotel.

The asylum legal aid system has collapsed and with that a huge amount of other stuff is a total mess. Everything connected to the asylum system is built on the assumption everyone in it has access to a lawyer who can explain and evidence things clearly within a reasonable time.

I am deeply concerned by the reported bombardment and potential ground incursion by Israeli forces in Rafah.  

My Office has an ongoing and active investigation into the situation in the State of Palestine. This is being taken forward as a matter of the utmost urgency, with a view to bringing to justice those responsible for Rome Statute crimes.

All wars have rules and the laws applicable to armed conflict cannot be interpreted so as to render them hollow or devoid of meaning.  This has been my consistent message, including from Ramallah last year.  Since that time, I have not seen any discernible change in conduct by Israel.  As I have repeatedly emphasised, those who do not comply with the law should not complain later when my Office takes action pursuant to its mandate.

To all those involved: my Office is actively investigating any crimes allegedly committed.  Those who are in breach of the law will be held accountable.

I also continue to call for the immediate release of all hostages.  This also represents an important focus of our investigations.

Rafah could become the deadliest and most destructive chapter of this conflict yet.

1.3 million people are sheltering here. 610,000 are children.

It is one of the last areas in Gaza where hospitals, water and sanitation facilities, and bakeries are still partially functioning. It's also the base for the majority of humanitarian organisations. (1/2)
