It’s been 27 days since my son, Shea, ended his life. In these 27 days, it feels like I’ve lived 27 years.
On June 1st, my world changed forever. Shea was only 27. He was my son, my heart, my Bubba. He is loved beyond words and missed terribly every single day.
I am sharing this because I need people to understand the danger of Kratom and especially the newer 7-OH products being sold everywhere. They are marketed as “natural” and “safe,” but they are anything but.
These products can be 7 to 20 times more potent, act on the same opioid receptors as opioids, and cause severe withdrawals. People become so dependent they can’t function without them.
I truly believe withdrawal and desperation from Kratom played a huge part in what happened to Shea. The afternoon before it happened, he sat out back with me and I had showed him a post my mom's friend had made about her son's suicide a year ago. He Cried while he was reading it. He looked at me and said "That's so sad. That's why I Could Never Do That To You, Mom." 30 minutes later he shoots himself. That wasn't my son. That was absolute desperation and hopelessness. He didn't know there was anything that could help him.
If you or someone you love is using Kratom, please do not ignore it. Learn about it. Talk about it. Get help if you need it. I was sent an article that said Doctors are treating people addicted to Kratom and 7-OH with medications like buprenorphine to reduce withdrawals and cravings. It says that in just a few hours after treatment, patients can start to feel stable and in control again. If I had known or Shea had known there was help, maybe things could have been different. I need people to know there are options before it’s too late.
If sharing Shea’s story saves even one life, then his death will not be in vain.
Forever my Bubba. Forever loved. 🩵
Proud dad moment today. My 10yr old son saw a new kid sitting by himself. Another friend and he decided to hang out with him over lunch. He got this lovely note at the end of the day😢❤️
I LOVE that all this COVID business has inspired so many country artists, and that they post all their brand new songs on Insta, but I HATE that I can’t download ANY of them.... 🤦🏼♀️
@ProfChrisMJones Thank you so much! I miss your class!! Yes, it is a wild time to be a teacher, but I’m just going with the flow like everyone else! It’s definitely a memorable first year teaching! I hope you’re doing well, also!
TOPEKA POLICE NEED YOUR HELP: Police are asking for the public's help in finding the person who left one Washburn football player dead, and another injured in an early Sunday morning shooting.
