House of Alimi at Ilorin was not as powerful as we imagine in the days of old.... It was the British and colonial rule to gave the Emir powers he never had. The defato powers at Ilorin resided with the Baloguns. Each Balogun was a tribal leader of his subgroup, acted as independent kings with their their own markets and treated with contempt any order of the Emir that did not suit them.

The first British colonial resident at Ilorin (David Carnegie) observed that ‘The Emir was powerless and that the actual rulers in Ilorin Emirate were the Balogun and the other Chiefs:

The defato ruler of Ilorin at the time was Balogun Inakoju. He was so powerful that he could install and depose an emir. He was also strongly against British rule...… In 1895, Balogun Inakoju staged a palace coup, had Emir Moma killed and placed a new puppet Emir Sulemanu on the throne...

His reason for deposing Emir Moma was his friendship with the British... He made agreements with them without the concent of Inakoju and the other Baloguns…. The British was uncomfortable with Inajoku's powers at Ilorin..... Moma's successor.... (Emir Sulemanu) was reluctant to discuss bi-lateral agreements with The British as well… He feared it would incur the wrath of Balogun Inakoju.

The British decided that Balogun Inakoju must be subdued and made an example. The concept of indirect rule required the emir to have strong centralized powers….

According to another Colonial administrator in 1900 (Dr. Dwyer).... ‘The only way by which the colonial administration could be established in Ilorin Emirate without much cost, was to depose and deport Balogun Inakoju, the actual ruler of Ilorin’

1902.... Inakoju was arrested after a six year campaign against him by Dwyer and Lord Lugard. He was deposed and exiled to Jebba.

Contrary to what the British had expected… The exile turned him into a folk hero.... It did not stop his followers from paying him homage…. The colonial administration totally underestimated Balogun Inakoju's influence at Ilorin… to their alarm, large crowds traveled from Ilorin to Jebba to show him support… To further disconnect him from his followers, he was moved from Jebba to Lokoja.
