Maktoob is a small newsroom. We survive largely on freelance reporters, young, grounded, courageous journalists from across the country who send us stories from places where mainstream media rarely goes. We can proudly say that we have introduced or amplified the work of more than 1,000 independent reporters over the years, a rare record in India’s independent media space.

When something happens in any corner of the country, within hours we can commission a story, or we begin receiving pitches from reporters on the ground. That network exists because people trust Maktoob. Because reporters know we will publish what others hesitate to touch.

But the biggest challenge is financial. We often fail to pay our freelancers on time. Lakhs of rupees remain in liability. Journalists who take real risks to tell uncomfortable truths deserve dignity, stability, and timely payment. A newsroom that documents hate, injustice, state excess, caste violence, Islamophobia, gender discrimination, labour struggles, and silenced communities cannot run on passion alone.

“I am very happy that others have been granted bail, even though I condemn the injustice meted out to them for so long.

As far as we are concerned, I firmly believe that Umar and I are being punished for organizing and spearheading what was probably the most important mass protest in recent Indian history. The judgment criminalizes organized protests and treats disruption as a terrorist act. This further blurs the distinction between terrorist activity and democratic protest and dissent.

On a personal note, my only concern is the physical and mental health of my elderly mother.

Apart from that, I remain optimistic about the case and that the truth will ultimately prevail. Inshallah, we will be successful.

Till then, I am pursuing my intellectual and academic journey to the extent I can.

Media claims are wrong that Sharjeel Imam’s bail rejection is due to his “chicken neck” speech made on 16 Jan 2020; this is misconceived & motivated.

That statement in the speech led to 5 separate FIRs where he has already been granted bail by the courts .

And even while granting bail Allahabad Court clearly stated "It may be noted that on an undisputed basis neither the applicant called any one to bear arms nor any violence was incited as a result of the speech delivered by the applicant."

There is no evidence and material against Sharjeel bhai linking him to the unfortunate riots between 22-24 Feb (more than a month after the speech), therefore the speech is being taken as a means to prejudice the public perception.

He remains in custody solely due to his role in organising the peaceful Shaheen Bagh protests against CAA. Shaheen Bagh was historic non-violent resistance, and criminalising it even after 6 years without a trial is the real injustice.

A frail figure, sporting a beard with a kurta & pyjama hung on him, scuttling with determination and head always held high is how one would have noticed Sharjeel Imam in the hostel 4 of IIT Bombay. It seemed he was unstoppable but if you managed to get his attention & asked something, a small discussion would turn into a barrage of historical incidents & facts, all from Sharjeel & the discussion would turn into a crash course on a historical event.

आज कल गोदी मीडिया में एक प्रोपेगेंडा चलाया जा रहा है, जिसके तहत शरजील ईमाम भाई के भाषण को काट छांट कर दिखाया जा रहा है और बताया जा रहा है उन्होंने ही दिल्ली में दंगा भड़काने का काम किया था, पर गोदी मीडिया बिना ये जाने वीडियो दिखाए जा रहा हैं की जब दिल्ली में दंगा हुआ था तब वो 1 महीने पहले से दिल्ली के तिहाड़ जेल में थे और जिस भाषण को वो दिखा रहे हैं, उन सभी केस में वो पहले से ज़मानत पर बाहर हैं। ख़ैर एक वीडियो मैं भी साझा करता हूं जो के गोदी मीडिया के सभी फेक प्रोपेगंडा का जवाब है।
