*The fact that you've tried something and failed doesn't make the attempt meaningless. You learned what it feels like to take a risk. You discovered what needs to change. You gained experience you couldn't have learned by staying comfortable. Failure can cost you something, but giving up can cost you the chance to discover what you were capable of.*💯
Good afternoon family hope y'all days going well
09:12. Room 304. Mr. B.
I walked in and found him hiding biscuits under the pillow like the pillow had a secret compartment and a business license.
The rustle gave him away. He froze. I froze. The packet did not freeze.
“Doctor said light food,” I said.
He did not blink. “Biscuit is light. It is air. With ambition.”
His chart said otherwise. Diabetes. A lecture from the morning team. A wife who had already confiscated one pack and hidden it in her handbag like evidence.
I lifted the pillow. Three sachets. One already open. Crumbs on the sheet, arranged with the confidence of a man who thought nurses only check machines.
“Mr. B.”
“It is for morale,” he said. “The ward is too quiet. Quiet raises sugar.”
I almost laughed. Almost. Then I checked his reading and the number killed the joke.
He watched me take the pack the way people watch their last plantain leave the plate. Then he lowered his voice, as if the glucometer could be bribed.
“Leave one. Just one. I will eat it slowly. Slowly is healthy.”
I left one. On the locker. Beside the machine. In full view, where morale could see it and temptation could not negotiate.
He sighed, lay back, and stared at the ceiling.
“You people don’t want joy in this hospital.”
“We want you discharged,” I said. “Joy can meet you at home. With a proper breakfast. Not a pillow full of evidence.”
He was quiet for a minute. Then, very small: “The wife sent you, abi?”
I did not answer. Some alliances do not need to be confirmed.
By 10:40 the biscuit was still there. Untouched. He had fallen asleep with one hand guarding it anyway.
That is the funny part of this job. Patients will hide the thing, defend the thing, rename the thing, and still know the thing is the problem.
Light food is not whatever fits under a pillow. And morale is easier to rebuild than a sugar level that has already made its point.
Let’s grab that cup of ours!!! 🥹😋. You can’t imagine how relieving and soft cooling this smoothie flows with your heart. From my heart this morning and quote
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
