@joniniplo There’s always a weird lack of curiosity for the medium that comes with it, too. Like when people apply this critique to cape comic authors. I don’t believe those comics are so insular because the authors are just too invested in the entire medium of comics!
@Sorazure15 Funny how this was the single page of the issue Ditko didn’t draw. Guessing it’s because he wouldn’t even draw nightmare sequences of heroes acting less than virtuous
@shinBR41N@Zer0reflect Also some fun little disconnects in visuals and words. This was pointed out by Andrew Rilstone in his great analysis, but the addition of that “the next morning” caption implies that Peter just kind of expected Aunt May to sit in the hall all night. Probably not Ditko’s intent
@shinBR41N@Zer0reflect There are at least pretty clear, disagreements between them. For example, Ditko didn’t like Spider-man’s quips (saying it undercut the awkward teenager element) while a lot of Lee’s complaints come up in the first Romita issue. 3 separate characters apologize for being mean!
@maraganger Also worth mentioning the professional colorist whose Facebook those swamp thing comparisons originally came from was actually hired to recolor it to match the originals for upcoming editions. So fingers crossed a message is being sent.
@GunnerDobbins Frank arguing with other heroes about being like him is a bit silly because he's coming from a hopeless place. Being the Punisher is a sort of giving up on a better future. He knows nothing he does is going to fundamentally change anything and he doesn't care.
@ShinNaldrag @ChibacityB@CheeseGX_ Would be incredible if this ever happens. Original Shonen Jump chapters of Mazinger are definitely some of my favorite Nagai stuff.
@GunnerDobbins It’s a great take, and draws on an often ignored aspect of the Ditko years: how Ben’s death is more treated as something that haunts him and he needs to move past. Hell, that’s a big part of the emotional catharsis of the Final Chapter!
@Richmond_Lee As a quick follow-up, all of Lampo just dropped on Amazon Kindle with zero fanfare. Based on the quality and the credits, looks to be a human translation, too
@naranciagaming@joniniplo It was certainly supposed to be, which is why it got a ton of complaints. You won’t believe what show it replaced in its time slot https://t.co/U5Es9mBjyf
@joniniplo Lot of people have no idea what to do with Tetsuya. The definitive Great Mazinger in my heart is the Ota manga, which ends with him getting his dad killed over his pride and blowing himself up. Accept nothing less.
@joniniplo (Not to mention that Venom was originally an obvious riff on celebrity stalkers, and it's so, so weird that's never been followed up on considering how much of Spider-man revolves around public perception and fame. Peter has to fight an alien addict instead I guess)
@joniniplo Can't find it, but I distinctly remember a Tegan O'Neil review on Green Lantern/Green Arrow saying that by trying to introduce real world issues to superheroes, instead of elevating the superhero genre, it more often drags serious issues down to the level of melodrama.
