China is secretly using thousands of fishing vessels to build massive “floating barriers.”

According to The New York Times, in one episode around 1,400 Chinese vessels halted normal fishing operations and assembled into a dense formation stretching more than 200 miles.

Earlier, around Christmas, about 2,000 vessels formed two parallel lines nearly 290 miles long.

Experts believe this is training for China’s maritime “people’s militia” — civilian vessels that Beijing is preparing to use in military scenarios.

In the event of a crisis, for example around Taiwan, such large groups of ships could overwhelm sea lanes, disrupt the movement of military and commercial vessels, create false radar targets, and effectively form a “gray zone” between civilian and military activity.
