Under current U.S. law, 501(c)(3) mosques (like churches and other houses of worship) are not allowed to endorse or oppose candidates for public office. That restriction is called the Johnson Amendment and when you violate it, it can jeopardize the tax-exempt status and trigger excise taxes on the organization.

And yet.

Mohammed Qazwini’s July 31, 2026 Friday sermon at the Muslim Educational Community Center of America in Canton, Michigan did exactly that.
