“Both Afghan women & some UN officials have described their situation as “gender apartheid.” TPS is a mechanism for circumstances that constitute generalized threats to safety, which is especially important for Afghan women.” https://t.co/E6q5NGNf15
Excited to share this new piece on why @hrw is calling for gender apartheid to be recognized as a crime under international law. This comes after long & careful discussion w/many colleagues about if there is need for such a law and any potential downsides. https://t.co/RUSirLPm52

The ICC arrest warrants is a meaningful step forward in the fight against gender persecution. It marks a critical move toward ensuring that violations of women’s rights and gender-based violence are never normalized. Yet, stronger measures and greater accountability remain urgently needed to deliver justice and elevate the voices of those who have long been silenced.
Check out this critical new report from @ClooneyFDN and @chreaamalawi -highlighting human rights violations against imprisoned women in Malawi and calling for legal and policy reform. @USCGouldLaw@usc_humanrights was honored to take part--we urge there to be follow up on the report's concrete recommendations for addressing gender-based violence and fair trial rights violations of women in Malawi as soon as possible.
HAPPENING NOW: CFJ’s #TrialWatch launches a new report today in #Malawi, revealing a troubling pattern: women who have been imprisoned for violent offenses are often survivors of gender-based violence (#GBV)–with many arrested for defending themselves against their abusers. ⬇️
We urge the @UN_HRC to heed UNSR's recommendation for the establishment of an additional comprehensive independent accountability mechanism demonstrating that the international community will not turn away from human rights violations in Afghanistan.
The situation of women & girls in #Afghanistan is continuing to deterioriate, @SR_Afghanistan told the @UN Human Rights Council.
The international community must stand with the Afghan people who continue to risk everything in pursuit of justice, dignity & peace, he said.

At the #UNSC, @azadahrm describes how the Taliban have erased women so thoroughly that they are suffocating in their homes, banned from even looking out the window.
"We, the women of #Afghanistan, call this gender apartheid."

DROPS Founder Mariam Safi @OfficialMariamS, in her powerful address to the European Parliament @Europarl_EN, reinforced a critical and undeniable reality: gender apartheid in Afghanistan is one of the leading drivers of forced displacement.
Under Taliban rule, Afghan women and girls face systematic oppression, exclusion from public life, and denial of basic rights — leaving them with no choice but to seek safety and dignity elsewhere.
At @displacedint, we highlighted this grim reality in our International Womens Day statement, urging the international community to take decisive action against the Taliban’s gender apartheid. Protecting Afghan women’s rights is essential to addressing the root causes of forced migration and ensuring their rightful place in society.

On #InternationalWomensDay, nowhere is the fight for women’s basic rights more urgent than in Afghanistan. From the archive this week, my report on the Taliban’s ban on girls & women attending high school & universities, in an ongoing attempt to erase them from public life.
