What a pleasure it was to welcome the artists from both the AIB Portrait Prize and AIB Young Portrait Prize exhibitions to the Gallery yesterday for the award ceremonies! It's honestly one of our favourite days in our calendar.
Don't miss seeing the exhibitions, until 9 March.
Heartfelt thanks to the incredible staff at the National Gallery of Ireland @NGIreland for making us feel so welcome during the AIB Portrait Prize events. They made those of us who felt somewhat like imposters occupying its hallowed walls as though we might belong. 🙏
Orpen was arguably the star of Christie's sale of the Mary & Alan Hobart Collection. Something to behold watching 'The Thinker on the Butte de Warlencourt' (1918) make £600000 🔨 realising a price of £756000 ✨ All in all a great day for Irish Art #williamorpen#irishart
Hugely significant portrait of Sir Hugh Lane by his close friend and lieutenant Sarah Cecilia Harrison. Given his bequest of modern French pictures including some Impressionist masterpieces it would be a fitting addition to @NationalGallery collection. Offered for sale by Adams.
These two portraits are being offered for sale at Adams Auctioneers next month. They came from the Harrison estate after she died and sold through the esteemed Gorry Gallery.
Sarah Cecilia Harrison was a cultural and political trailblazer. She founded a number of successful projects aimed at combating unemployment in Dublin. In 1912, as soon as women were able to stand for election as councillors, she successfully won a seat on Dublin City Council.
Alongside her effectual political career, Harrison also worked as a portrait painter. Her many commissions included Dublin and London based cultural and political pioneers - this portrait of Hugh Lane being one example, in fact she painted three portraits of Lane over her career.
