@MosheIsaacian@michaelmiraflor What about the experience of being managed by a first-time manager is a pain point for you? Probably some interesting insight there for those of us that manage managers.
@GodisRivera Are we (the group working in the opportunity space) aligned to what a strategy is and what it will do for us?
I have been hyper aware lately of how many people have different definitions or expectations about what a strategy is and how they look different in different contexts.
@epatt6 I'm really a "form follows function" person. I'll spend as much time in the problem space as it takes to have context, identify learning gaps, understand business impact, etc. Sometimes it's 5 mins, sometimes multiples weeks.
@kuangrf I am 150 pages in and can't stop thinking about it. Truly shaping up to be one of the best books I have read this year. Thank you for sharing this story!
@CoteUXUI I regret how long I discredited my gut feelings around management, leadership, and communication to thinking it was just the norm in corporate culture (I had switched industries). My gut feelings ended up being indicators of root problems where I could show up and influence.
@allisongrayce@lauraklein@Folletto I can +1 this. Less emphasis on methods, more emphasis on a strong story:
1. how the problem was identified
2. Research design based on problem
3. how the findings influenced the identified problem
Interviewers will follow up about the details of the study if they need them!
@albanvillamil@leeloowrites As a hiring manager for ux research, I have found that this requirement tends to be contradictory. many folks with academic research experience found in masters/phds programs are told their work is "too slow" in the interview process. Really just another gatekeeping mechanism.
@johncutlefish Also, most middle managers think #3 is all there is and experience a lot of burn out around 1 and 2, which require strategic rather than tactical skill sets.
@johncutlefish My guess is most people think 3 is all there is, since it is the stuff that is most visible and has the biggest impact to how they feel as an employee. The ability to successfully navigate a team within to achieve company outcomes is a huge systems level long game.
@kevinmhoffman It's easier to estimate when I know the people involved and when the size of the group is fairly small. Also, remote facilitation is a different game because any conversation takes place one at a time, rather than having an easy way to do small groups.
@kristincurrier TL;DR this kind of thing is so hard because of the scale, complexity, altitudes, etc. I don't know anyone (yet) who has figured this out 😅
@kristincurrier I've been testing out something similar but connecting it to services that customers interact with and employees facilitate as the backbone. It might break down if you get too in the weeds with the connections, but at a high level it might show gaps, highlight overlap, etc.
@odannyboy Fantasy as a genre has really evolved in the last five years or so - I'd recommend newer stuff if someone was trying to break into it. A Darker Shade of Magic, the Summer Dragon, Six of Crows, Foundryside, Circe, and Uprooted all come to mind.
