@TheAmRev@dixie_cavalier The grave exists as a numbered block but there is no headstone identifying him by name. Burial records do indicate he is there in grave 8.
Over the past 3 days (9/28-9/30) we've been at Oakwood Cemetery installing headstones with the Virginia Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans Oakwood Committee and area camp volunteers. 32 new Confederate soldier headstones have been installed since Monday. We work hard but do take time to enjoy some hamburgers and hotdogs at lunchtime.
@TheAmRev@dixie_cavalier Will be going to the cemetery this coming Tuesday. Will check the indicated plot location and let you know if a headstone is in place.
Our camp and the Brig General W C Wickham SCV Camp #2250 are having a headstone dedication service to remember these 4 Hanover soldiers who died and were placed in numbered only graves at Oakwood Cemetery. They have individual headstones now and are no longer forgotten.
Today, we completed our second Adopt-a-Highway roadside cleanup of the year. One of the owners of Hanover Country Store saw us in action and generously provided everyone with a free breakfast sandwich. We hope all Hanover County residents will support this local business. They are wonderful people.
This weekend we assisted the SCV Virginia Divisionβs Oakwood Committee with the installation of upright Confederate headstones at Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, VA. Many of the ones we put up today were for Florida soldiers who died a long way from home.
Members of the Robert E Lee SCV Camp 1589 and JEB Stuart SCV Camp 1343 were out there with us.
The flag we installed recently at Yellow Tavern wasn't the right size. So we replaced it today with a bigger and higher quality flag (military grade) that looks so much better.
Yesterday we held another well-attended meeting. It was good to see everyone again after our short summer break.
We received an application and ancestry documentation from a new member candidate. We also announced two new members who have transferred into our camp.
Our guest speaker was Gregg Clemmer, historian and author of Valor in Gray: The Recipients of the Confederate Medal of Honor. Gregg shared the moving story of one of these heroes, Richard Kirkland.
This week we were back at Yellow Tavern performing our regular maintenance of cutting grass, trimming, and blowing clippings. While there we replaced the stick flags on the Iron Cross and the flag on the flagpole.
Our camp has been selected to serve as host camp for the 2027 Virginia Division Reunion. We have been working closely with the Virginia Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans on all the details. Since this is their event, all official communications about it will come from the Division. Please know that we are working hard behind the scenes to put everything together.
