Central Bank raises the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) by 100 basis points to 8.75%.

The Central Bank says rising global oil prices, Middle East tensions, higher domestic energy costs, and stronger credit-driven demand pushed inflation to 5.4% in April 2026.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s Monetary Policy Board has increased the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) by 100 basis points to 8.75% following its meeting held yesterday.

The Board said the decision was taken amid rising global and domestic economic uncertainties, particularly due to heightened tensions in the Middle East that have kept global oil prices elevated.

CBSL noted that higher fuel and energy costs significantly contributed to Sri Lanka’s inflation rising to 5.4% year-on-year in April 2026. The Bank also observed stronger demand conditions in the economy, driven by continued credit growth, higher imports, and improving economic activity.

The Board expects inflation to remain above the 5% target in the near term before gradually stabilising around the target over the medium term.
