‼️🚨 BREAKING: An AI found a Linux kernel zero-day that roots every distribution since 2017. The exploit fits in 732 bytes of Python. Patch your kernel ASAP.

The vulnerability is CVE-2026-31431, nicknamed "Copy Fail," disclosed today by Theori. It has been sitting quietly in the Linux kernel for nine years.

Most Linux privilege-escalation bugs are picky. They need a precise timing window (a "race"), or specific kernel addresses leaked from somewhere, or careful tuning per distribution. Copy Fail needs none of that. It is a straight-line logic mistake that works on the first try, every time, on every mainstream Linux box.

The attacker just needs a normal user account on the machine. From there, the script asks the kernel to do some encryption work, abuses how that work is wired up, and ends up writing 4 bytes into a memory area called the "page cache" (Linux's high-speed copy of files in RAM). Those 4 bytes can be aimed at any program the system trusts, like /usr/bin/su, the shortcut to becoming root.

Result: the next time anyone runs that program, it lets the attacker in as root.

What should worry most: the corruption never touches the file on disk. It only exists in Linux's in-memory copy of that file. If you imaged the hard drive afterwards, the on-disk file would match the official package hash exactly. Reboot the machine, or just put it under memory pressure (any normal system load that needs the RAM), and the cached copy reloads fresh from disk.

Containers do not help either. The page cache is shared across the whole host, so a process inside a container can use this bug to compromise the underlying server and reach into other tenants.

The original sin was a 2017 "in-place optimization" in a kernel crypto module called algif_aead. It was meant to make encryption slightly faster. The change broke a critical safety assumption, and nobody noticed for nine years. That bug then rode every kernel update from 2017 to today.

This vulnerability affects the following:
🔴 Shared servers (dev boxes, jump hosts, build servers): any user becomes root
🔴 Kubernetes and container clusters: one compromised pod escapes to the host
🔴 CI runners (GitHub Actions, GitLab, Jenkins): a malicious pull request becomes root on the runner
🔴 Cloud platforms running user code (notebooks, agent sandboxes, serverless functions): a tenant becomes host root

Timeline:
🔴 March 23, 2026: reported to the Linux kernel security team
🔴 April 1: patch committed to mainline (commit a664bf3d603d)
🔴 April 22: CVE assigned
🔴 April 29: public disclosure

Mitigation: update your kernel to a build that includes mainline commit a664bf3d603d. If you cannot patch immediately, turn off the vulnerable module:

For environments that run untrusted code (containers, sandboxes, CI runners), block access to the kernel's AF_ALG crypto interface entirely, even after patching. Almost nothing legitimate needs it, and blocking it shuts the door on this whole class of bug...

They should tear it up and tell Mauritius it’s over, instead they will now make arrangements for Chagossians to return home. They can look after their own affairs and they want the UK to remain Sovereign. Also British taxpayers won’t have to pay £35bn to Mauritius either. A great result!

Lots covered on @TalkTV earlier including defence, welfare and the economy: Cuts to defence go back to the end of the Cold War when governments took a “peace dividend”. The UK and much of Europe reduced defence spending too far, leaving armed forces smaller and less prepared for today’s growing threats.

On strategic defence planning, industry cannot prepare or expand without clarity from government. The defence investment plan linked to the Strategic Defence Review still hasn’t been published, we've been waiting for over a year, by this government, creating uncertainty about what capability the UK actually intends to fund.

It's becoming clear and obvious that China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, all working together to damage the nature of what I call the free world, and we've been stupid enough and ridiculous enough over the last 15 years not to recognize the progressive increase in the threat. The UK must recognise and respond to that reality and increase defence spending accordingly.

My message to this Government is simple: show determination and ban the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Britain must not tolerate those who threaten lives on our shores, and for years the IRGC has threatened people on British soil. Our security services have already foiled around 20 Iranian-linked plots involving sabotage and assassination here in the UK. That should concern every one of us.

Yet despite repeated calls across Parliament, the IRGC is still not proscribed. Defence of the realm begins with the defence of our own country. If an organisation is threatening, intimidating and pursuing people here in Britain, we should act. Proscribing the IRGC would give our security services stronger powers to disrupt and stop those responsible.

The Islamist threat hasn’t gone anywhere - there will be another atrocity. There will be many more, sadly. I don’t think we should just sit back and wait for that, do you?

An attack takes place. Possibly something might change. Nothing does. It fades away. We wait for another attack. The cycle repeats and repeats.

It is so very depressing.

A Restore Britain Government, on day one, would act before they do.

How?

- Fully recognise the Islamist threat.
- Suspend visa routes from countries designated as high-risk for terrorism and extremist activity. Very important. Stop the flow.
- Every illegal deported.
- Remove foreign Islamist extremists - day one.
- Strip British citizenship from dual national extremists, and then deport them too.
- Take urgent steps to remove ‘British’ terrorists if they have given up a second citizenship in an attempt to remain in Britain.
- Stronger oversight of institutions where extremist ideology is promoted - close down the mosques that accommodate this filth.
- Brutally dismantle domestic Islamist extremist networks.
- Forensically investigate every terror suspect for funding links.
- Referendum on the death penalty, put Islamist child murderers to death.

These attacks will happen again. It’s a question of when, and the British Government is just waiting for it.

We must now accept that Islamist extremism is the biggest threat to both our national security and our way of life.

Restore Britain would not wait for more attacks - we would act. Immediately.
