Airlines do need to maintain order on board, but the crew should always use measures that are necessary, proportionate, and justifiable. If there was a genuine safety concern, the airline should explain why such measures were necessary. If there wasn’t sufficient justification, then the airline should be prepared to face scrutiny from the public and regulators.
More importantly, when a person’s safety and dignity are at stake, the real question is: what standards should airlines follow when handling situations like this?
