I think the question is so huge that I won't be able to completely answer it exactly, but for me I can say that happiness is if I'm good with myself, that's happiness in fact.

What is happiness?

Happiness is smiling. Happiness is eating, being good with everyone. Happiness is also encountering very difficult situations that teach you to move forward, not to stop.”

Je pense que la question est tellement énorme que je ne pourrai pas totalement y répondre de manière exacte, mais pour moi je pourrai dire que le bonheur c’est si je suis bien avec moi-même, c’est le bonheur.

C’est quoi le bonheur?

Le bonheur, c’est sourire. Le bonheur c’est manger, être bien avec tous le monde. Le bonheur c’est aussi rencontrer des situations très difficiles qui t’apprennent à aller de lavant, de ne pas s’arrêter.”

“My name is AjiFanta Marenah. I am from the Gambia. I was born in the Gambia and was partially raised there. Now, I live in New York. I have been living here since I was 12 years old.

Happiness is a hard question. It can mean so many things. I think I’ve been through a journey, where I didn’t know what happiness meant, and so I had to find that…

So for me, I think that happiness comes from community. I find so much joy from being in community, whether it is with women’s groups, like @DreamZahara, or whether it’s with my Gambian youth organization when I am on the road, and volunteering, doing the food pantry, I just love when we are in community. We are able to be our authentic selves and just be in freedom to just enjoy the joys of life without worrying about the barriers, and the struggles.

For me happiness is just about community – how we build community. How we amplify community, how we celebrate community and all that comes with it: the clothes, the food, the culture. I just love it all.

One of my favorite times of the year is Ramadan. I am at the Mosque all the time. Sometimes, I sit down, and I look at everybody and I feel so fulfilled. I thank God for the opportunity to sit there.”
