كارثة بيئية وصحية تهدد الحياة
في الوقت الذي يحتفل فيه العالم بيوم البيئة العالمي، تقف غزة شاهدة على واحدة من أكبر الكوارث البيئية والإنسانية في العصر الحدي��، بعد أن تحولت الحرب إلى حربٍ على الإنسان والماء والتربة والهواء ومقومات الحياة كافة.
• تدمير أو تضرر أكثر من 80% من المباني والمنشآت.
• أكثر من 57 مليون طن من الركام و5 ملايين طن من الأسبستوس المتراكم.
• أكثر من 7,000 طن من الذخائر غير المنفجرة ما زالت تهدد حياة المدنيين.
• نحو 100,000 طن من المتفجرات أُلقيت على غزة، مسببة تلوثًا بيئيًا واسعًا وخطيرًا.
وفي قطاع المياه:
• تدمير أكثر من 80% من مرافق المياه.
• تدمير 203 بئر مياه كليًا أو جزئيًا من أصل 319 بئرًا.
• انخفاض كميات المياه المتاحة بأكثر من 20%.
• حصة الفرد من المياه أقل من 14 لترًا يوميًا.
أما قطاع الصرف الصحي:
• تدمير 6 محطات معالجة مياه عادمة بالكامل.
• تصريف أكثر من 60 ألف متر مكعب يوميًا من المياه العادمة غير المعالجة إلى البحر والأودية والبيئة.
• وجود أكثر من 320,000 حفرة امتصاصية بديلة تهدد التربة والمياه الجوفية.
وفي ظل هذه الظروف:
• أكثر من مليون طن من النفايات الصلبة والطبية تتكدس بشكل عشوائي.
• تصاعد انتشار الأمراض المرتبطة بتلوث المياه و��راكم النفايات، بما فيها الأمراض الجلدية والمعوية والتهاب الكبد الوبائي.
إن ما يجري في غزة لم يعد أزمة إنسانية فحسب، بل إبادة بيئية وصحية شاملة تهدد حاضر السكان ومستقبل الأجيال القادمة، وتتطلب تحركًا دوليًا عاجلًا لوقف التدمير، وفتح المعابر، وإدخال المعدات والوقود والمواد اللازمة لإنقاذ البيئة والحياة في قطاع غزة.

Gaza on World Environment Day 2026

An Environmental and Health Catastrophe Threatening Life
While the world marks World Environment Day, Gaza stands as a witness to one of the gravest environmental and humanitarian disasters of modern history, where war has turned into an assault on people, water, soil, air, and every essential element of life.
• More than 80% of buildings and infrastructure have been destroyed or damaged.
• Over 57 million tons of rubble and 5 million tons of accumulated asbestos remain across Gaza.
• More than 7,000 tons of unexploded ordnance continue to threaten civilians.
• Around 100,000 tons of explosives have been dropped on Gaza, causing massive environmental contamination.
Water sector devastation includes:
• Destruction of more than 80% of water facilities.
• 203 water wells destroyed partially or completely out of 319 wells.
• More than 20% reduction in available water supplies.
• Per capita water access has fallen below 14 liters per day.
In the sewage sector:
• 6 wastewater treatment plants have been completely destroyed.
• More than 60,000 cubic meters of untreated sewage are discharged daily into the sea and environment.
• Over 320,000 improvised absorption pits now threaten soil and groundwater contamination.
Meanwhile:
• More than 1 million tons of solid and medical waste are piling up randomly.
• Water contamination and waste accumulation are accelerating the spread of skin diseases, gastrointestinal infections, and hepatitis outbreaks.
What is happening in Gaza is no longer merely a humanitarian crisis; it is a comprehensive environmental and health annihilation threatening both present and future generations. Urgent international action is needed to stop the destruction, open crossings, and allow the entry of fuel, equipment, and essential supplies to save life and the environment in Gaza.

Today, and every day, after I finish the routine of this life forced upon me, wearing down a body that has become soulless, I walk with heavy, slow steps toward the sea. From the aftermath of my heart’s terrifying aches, my mind gives birth to countless memories that both existed and never were. To my misfortune, my heart, I walk, without you, in the presence of nothingness. I walk amidst the debates of the displaced; the first asks: "How long will we remain like this?" while the other curses Netanyahu and replies: "For a very long time."

Will I ever return to you, my room?
To my misfortune as well, I do not know the answer. I am no longer equipped to answer, as if the world ground to a halt at the very last jerrycan, and instead of filling it with water, I filled it with regret. The regret of fleeing my hometown, Beit Hanoun. If only the house had been bombed over my head, and I had died there, among the flowers I planted with my own tired hands.
If only the world, mother, had spared me just a little, so I could offer you something more than my talk of longing. Perhaps I could have, but I failed. Perhaps the tragedy of this reality, mother, will change one day.

And it is so difficult for me to believe all the real-life horrors happening in this time of ours. I move forward, my heart overflowing with weeping and wailing; I move forward, trapped between the past and the past.

Yesterday, the UN Human Rights Office reported that Israel is systematically targeting public servants in Gaza—collapsing public order—as Palestinians continue to be killed and maimed.

You might not know since it got no coverage. Because why would ongoing genocide be newsworthy?

I sit here with my friends almost every day. I love looking at the sea—sometimes it is calm, and other times it rages. It is deeply affected by us; it loves us just as we love it.

Today, I called my friend so we could go and sit in that spot. I don’t know what made us decide to change the place we were going to. Perhaps it was the love of someone out there that stopped fate from leading us there, because the Israeli occupation aircraft bombed the exact spot where we usually sit.

Between death and us is a very simple decision; between death and us is a single word.

This has happened to me more than 20 times, and I do not know why God chooses, every single time, for me to remain in this harsh life.

I don’t know what’s more disturbing, the image of children’s bodies torn apart (again) or the fact that it’s barely considered newsworthy because the children are Palestinian.
