I made this MTN investment at ₦250 per share little over a year ago and has delivered an 18.4% dividend yield to date and 225% capital appreciation. I did a valuation play on MTN twice last year and shared both here.

Don’t listen to the naysayers. Deploy your funds like your life depends on it when you spot a valuable company trading at a massive discount. That is what I do!

This company paid an interim dividend of ₦5 and a final dividend of ₦15 for FY 2025. MTN just paid another interim dividend of ₦26, and there is a possibility of another ₦26 final dividend for FY 2026.

The yield on this investment, if you factor in the FY 2026 final payment, will eventually beat the return from most MMFs at my purchase price. This is not even taking into account the 225% capital appreciation.

Some of my followers would remember when I mentioned that some companies’ dividend yields would eventually beat those of MMFs at the prices they were trading at then, if you timed your entry point very well.

MTN was not alone on this table.

I am not discounting your experience or implying that you are lying o, but the market has been significantly more liquid over the past few years.

In fact, "since this year" has been the most liquid the market has been since 2014, when the market reached an all-time high (excluding the inflated outlier years of 2007 and 2008).

Or did you buy Omatek, FTN Cocoa, and Japaul during the strong momentum early in the year, and the "entire market" is getting a bashing for individual-and-specific choices?

You may need to fully understand how equity ownership works, its risk and returns. Then, you'd see why it is the one of the greatest wealth creator in the world.

Dividend is an icing, really. Stocks are not fixed-income.

MTNN listed at ₦90 in 2019. It is ₦832 today in 2026. That's 9x in seven (7) years excluding dividends.

In H1 2026, investors who bought/locked in at ₦90 will be getting 29% yield on their invested capital - from interim dividends alone. No fixed-income instrument yield (per annum) comes close today in Nigeria (except for perhaps risky private lending).

If this is not wealth creation, I wonder what is.

You’re looking at only one side of the investment.

And you didn’t consider CAPITAL appreciation.

1.8m in dividends is not the total return on her 35m.

If she accumulated those MTN shares over the years at prices significantly below today’s price, the capital appreciation could be worth far more than the dividends she’s receiving.

And if she has been reinvesting those dividends , That’s another layer of compounding.

So before saying
35m just to make ₦1.8m yearly , I’ll pass,

you need to look deeper oooo

What was her average purchase price.
How long has she held.
How much has the position appreciated.
How much has she received/reinvested in dividends.

What am I saying , That 1.8m is not the whole story.

You’re judging the tree by the fruits it dropped this year while ignoring how much the tree itself has grown.

That is myopic .

Stock market is an ultimate driver of wealth.
