I strongly condemn the heinous attacks by terrorist militias targeting the U.S. Consulate General and civilian areas in Erbil. These deliberate acts of aggression pose a grave threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region. This is unacceptable.

I once again call unequivocally upon the federal government in Baghdad to take immediate, decisive, and tangible actions against these outlaw armed groups and militias. It is incumbent upon the federal government to use all means to thwart these terrorist attacks and bring those responsible to justice.

Today, @SenBlumenthal and I introduced the Save the Kurds Act.

I believe that there is strong bipartisan support for the idea of protecting the Kurds in Syria and beyond because they have been such a reliable ally to the United States. The SDF – with a large Kurdish element – took the brunt of the fight to defeat ISIS in President Trump’s first term.

I realize Syria is complicated culturally, ethnically and politically. However, attacking the Kurds greatly diminishes the United States’ standing and will hinder Syria’s ability to grow as a country.

To those countries or groups who believe it is open season on the Kurds in Syria without consequence, you will be sadly mistaken.

The usual terrorists on the federal government’s payroll have once again attacked our critical Khor Mor gas field, leading to blackouts in neighbourhoods across the Kurdistan Region.

Electricity exports to the rest of Iraq — roughly 10% of the country’s entire generation — have also flatlined.

How many attacks must happen before the US government simply allows the KRG to purchase kinetic anti-drone equipment for us to defend our skies and critical infrastructure? The Iraqi government isn’t interested.

I’m pleased to announce that Halabja is the first province to switch entirely to 24-hour electricity.

The new progressive tariffs protect low-income households and incentivise responsible usage.

The Kurdistan Region has lost nearly 200,000 barrels of oil production after a spate of drone attacks by criminal militias on the Iraqi government payroll.

Five oil fields have been hit — including two operated by U.S. companies.

This production keeps the lights on and the government running. Without it, the Region’s very survival — and its infrastructure — hangs in the balance.

The KRG welcomed U.S. investment and companies. Now, those same investors are being pushed out in a calculated campaign to economically strangle us.

Our American partners have long denied us the tools to defend our energy and civilian infrastructure. We need them now to help us defend ourselves — we know exactly who’s behind these attacks and where they’re coming from.

Still no call from @SecRubio. We need more than words.

The KRG Ministry of Electricity announced tonight that eight new neighbourhoods in Erbil, comprising nearly 30,000 homes and businesses, switched to 24/7 power at midnight.

The first neighbourhoods in Suli and Duhok will move to 24/7 power in the next few weeks too.
