Sources: Regional Country Expected to Recognize Somaliland After Israel’s Historic Recognition
Multiple sources indicate that another country in the region may officially recognize Somaliland in the coming days, following Israel’s decision to become the first United Nations member state to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state.
The reported potential recognition would represent a major diplomatic development for Somaliland, which has pursued international recognition for more than three decades after declaring independence from Somalia in 1991.
Israel announced its recognition of Somaliland on December 26, 2025, marking the first time a UN member state formally recognized Somaliland’s independence.
The move was followed by the signing of a mutual recognition declaration between Israeli and Somaliland leaders, with both sides expressing interest in expanding cooperation in areas including diplomacy, technology, agriculture, health, and economic development.
Somaliland authorities welcomed Israel’s decision as a significant milestone in their long-running campaign for international recognition, while Somalia’s federal government rejected the move, describing it as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Regional organizations and several countries also expressed concern over the implications of the recognition.
The latest reports suggest that another regional country could follow Israel’s move, although the identity of the country and the timing of any announcement have not been officially confirmed.
Somaliland has maintained its own government, security forces, currency, and democratic institutions since 1991, but until Israel’s decision, it had lacked formal recognition from any UN member state.
Observers say further recognitions by other countries could significantly change Somaliland’s international standing and reshape diplomatic relations in the Horn of Africa.

Somaliland still yearns for the international recognition it rightfully deserves.
Our people have a legitimate right to self-determination. Our history is clear, our case is rooted in law, and our pursuit of recognition is both just and legitimate.
Somaliland must hold itself accountable and return to upholding the nation and its Constitution. Otherwise, it risks taking a path from which it may never recover-a path that could bring destruction and hardship to its people.
