1935: Ernest Hemingway, holding a tommy gun, aboard his yacht, the Pilar...
This photograph captures Ernest Hemingway in his natural element: the open water, a boat, and a hint of danger. By 1935, Hemingway had already crafted a public persona built on adventure, physical courage, and the pursuit of intense experience. His yacht, the Pilar, was more than a fishing vessel. It was his floating refuge, writing studio, and occasionally, his staging ground for stunts that blurred the line between bravado and mythmaking.
During the mid 1930s, Hemingway became fascinated by the idea of hunting large game at sea, particularly marlin and tuna. But he was equally obsessed with the rising threat of Caribbean pirates who preyed on fishing boats. Whether the pirates were a real concern or simply gave him an excuse to bring weapons aboard is debatable. Still, the Pilar famously carried rifles, handguns, and even a Thompson submachine gun like the one he holds here.
Scenes like this contribute to the legend of Hemingway: the writer who insisted on living the adventure he wrote about, who blurred literature and life until they looked almost the same. It is an image of swagger, but also of a man who felt most alive when testing the edge.
During World War II, Hemingway volunteered the Pilar for anti-submarine patrols off Cuba, cruising the waters with weapons, grenades, and a crew he jokingly called his “Q-boat” unit, hoping to spot German U-boats.

Spent 3 hrs from 10:30pm to 1:30am on ORR, reviewing the ORR revamp plans & challenges from KR Puram to Iblur Jn led by BLR Dev Minister @krishnabgowda
Admire his commitment to make a difference & understanding of the challenges. Feel hopeful for BLR. @CMofKarnataka
Rarely does a Minister buck the trend and stand up to illogical populism that will eventually destroy everything. Krishna Byregowda is a rare example. His drive to clear footpaths is fraught with dangers and consequences, but he is doing the right thing. We need more ministers like him who are ready to bite the bullet.
Certain sections in the ruling Karnataka Congress are “apprehensive” about this. They claim these people are their vote bank, which I dispute. Majority are outsiders and they are not even registered voters here.
Minister KBG should also go after the residents (middle class to uber rich) who have also encroached upon the footpaths.
Chances of succeeding are 50:50. Unseen hands might force him to apply the breaks. We can’t make Bengaluru anything if we don’t reclaim footpaths. @krishnabgowda
@Captain_Mani72@IyerNat@AshokKhemka_IAS@IASassociation And yet we do come across rare risk taking individuals of caliber like Mr Sridharan of Delhi Metro or Mr T N Seshan of the Election Commision etc etc whom we admire and celebrate in public life.
"Shri Manivannan has brought about a paradigm shift in the functioning of the BDA. Citizens are now treated with dignity and governance has become more transparent and accessible. The open-house initiative is a model worthy of replication across public institutions.
I really hope I don’t have to do this frequently. But, if officers and contractors do not listen and do their job, unfortunately, I will be forced. I appeal to them to do their job properly.
Today, I happened to observe an asphalt work in progress. I was doubtful of the quality. I asked the Commissioner to inspect this asphalt work. Indeed, the work was found to be substandard. Sadly, officer is suspended and contractor penalised.
