Thirty years ago, intersex advocates refused to stay silent. October 26th marks Intersex Awareness Day and their fight for bodily autonomy.
Intersex people have variations in their bodies like reproductive anatomy, hormones or chromosomes that don’t fit stereotypes of male or female bodies.
Nearly 2% of all people are intersex. Some intersex traits are noticed at birth, others during puberty or later.
Today, intersex people still face harmful “normalizing” surgeries and medical interventions. These surgeries are most common on babies, not medically necessary, and risk physical health, sexual function and fertility.
Intersex people deserve choices about our bodies.
