Following Pope Leo’s encyclical on artificial intelligence, questions about AI’s spiritual and ethical dimensions are gaining global attention. Against this backdrop, PTC spoke with me in London about the growing concern within the Sikh community: the rise of AI-generated fake “Gurbani” and what it means for spirituality in general, and Sikh thought in particular.

What began as an investigation into fake “Gurbani” responses produced by AI chatbots has now reached discussions with the UK Government, at a time when Britain is helping shape the global direction of AI policy and regulation.

UPDATE: AI FABRICATING “GURBANI” NOW RAISED WITH UK GOVERNMENT
Britain, as a leading voice on ethical technology and online regulation, carries significant influence in shaping how democratic societies respond to the global challenges posed by artificial intelligence.
Appreciative of Rt Hon Pat McFadden MP @patmcfaddenmp for formally conveying concerns we raised regarding AI-generated fabrication and distortion of Gurbani to the UK’s Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology.

“Press Freedom” and the Great Indian Media Paradox”
Press freedom in India. A grave crisis? A global emergency?
Western editorial boards certainly seem convinced.
Meanwhile, across India, hundreds of thousands of YouTubers spend their evenings shouting into ring lights, accusing politicians, bureaucrats and industrialists of corruption, incompetence, treachery, cronyism or outright criminality. Daily. To audiences running into the millions.
But apparently, that does not count as Press.
Because “Press”, in the internationally approved sense, remains a more exclusive institution. Accreditation cards. Bureau offices. RTI filings. Moderated press briefings where carefully-managed questions are presented as fearless accountability journalism.
A YouTube channel operating from a small-town flat exposing procurement scandals at midnight? Digital clutter. Kindly move along.
And here the contradiction becomes difficult to ignore.
Many of the institutions said to embody Indian press freedom, the legacy broadcasters and grand old newspapers, made their accommodation with power more than a decade ago.
Still, observers sitting thousands of miles away continue riding to their rescue, waving democracy indices like 🆘 flares.
A prison break organised for inmates who renovated the cell and listed it on Airbnb?
Meanwhile, the genuinely unruly business of scrutiny has long migrated elsewhere. YouTube. Podcasts. Instagram monologues. A chaotic ecosystem full of exaggeration, speculation and occasional recklessness. One frequently guilty of confusing volume with evidence, a distinction first perfected by branded television studios.
What this ecosystem possesses, however, is freedom in its rawest form. Loud. Decentralised. Ungovernable. Impossible to fully domesticate.
Which may explain why it struggles to qualify as “Press” in the eyes of those compiling international scorecards.
The paradox is not especially subtle.
At the precise moment India’s traditional media grew tastelessly comfortable around political power, the country also produced one of the most aggressive and expansive cultures of commentary anywhere in the democratic world.
That parallel universe does not fit neatly inside inherited global press freedom templates. Fair enough.
But pretending it does not exist has moved well beyond ignorance. It now resembles selective blindness.

Anchoring, broadcast reporting and television interviewing can survive on projection. Acting cannot. Pretence is fatal to a character. The camera sees through it in seconds.
A role has to sink into the body, the voice, the eyes, the pauses, the expressions. Without that immersion, even the most recognisable anchor can end up looking painfully out of place on screen.

Residents were encouraged to use the LG Listening Post platform, and taking that assurance seriously, I wrote on April 30 about the growing civic disorder in Subhash Nagar. I raised concerns over unauthorised eateries turning into night time car bars, residential lanes choked with double and triple parking, unchecked encroachments, and public passages being captured with marble work and oversized flower pots.
There has been no acknowledgement so far, and little sign of “sustained enforcement”. A city cannot function when residential neighbourhoods are left to drift into unregulated commercial zones while residents are made to feel invisible.
If public participation is being invited, there must also be visible accountability and response. Thank you.
Residents of Delhi are encouraged to share their grievances through the LG Listening Post platform.
Your voice matters, and we are committed to listening with sensitivity and responding with care.
You may submit your concerns through the official website, mobile app, or via email for timely and appropriate redressal.
When was the last time you wrote something by hand?
A letter? A thought? Even your own name, outside a formal signature?

Those who drooled over Ardas offered for Trump’s ascent, that tiny but loud section of the Sikh diaspora which convinced itself that an America under Trump would tilt against India only in their favour, now confronts a harder truth. The fantasy has nowhere left to hide.
Origin does not dissolve. No accent, no passport, no marriage, no reinvention alters how Trumpism — which stands for white nationalism and white supremacy — decides to read you.
In that gaze, they remain fixed, filed under the same contempt. Faith offers no exemption. Loyalty earns no reprieve.
Trump has already named the frame. In his telling, all others come from a hellhole.
Attended an event about justice and race at Lincoln’s Inn. Left thinking about handwriting. Both conversations were about the same thing. Some reflections in the Substack link.
