The escalation ladder being followed is clear. As expected, after days of tit-for-tat, Iran has moved towards the option of Anti-ship ballistic missiles. US CENTCOM has announced the targeting of 3 Iranian oil tankers in response to the IRGC launching anti-ship ballistic missiles against US warships.

This exchange confirms the earlier thesis that "The key question is no longer whether Iran can escalate, but when Tehran might decide that doing so serves its interests".

This is a major escalation as both parties have moved up the ladder. This is a new and complex challenge for US naval assets and wider regional security architecture because conflict could go beyond the corridors in the Strait of Hormuz.
