I am proud and humbled to have been selected as Labourโs candidate for Makerfield.
These proud working-class communities represent the very best values of our country and they deserve so much better. It would be my honour to work for them every day, if elected as their MP, to achieve that.
Many people here feel Westminster isnโt working for them and they are right. I am standing to change that and get the voice of these communities heard loud and clear.
I am glad that this by-election has finally put the places that make up the Makerfield constituency into the national spotlight. They have been neglected by national politics for too long. It is a good thing that all political parties are now on the hook to tell the voters here what they are going to do for them.
More than anything, people need life to be more affordable again. As Mayor, I have brought in changes which are helping, such as the ยฃ2 fare cap, free bus travel for our 16-18 year-olds and removing the 9.30am restriction from older and disabled peopleโs bus passes. But there is only so much I can do from Greater Manchester. If elected, I will have a relentless focus on reducing peopleโs everyday costs and bills and well as securing the investment these communities need.
I have been an elected representative in Greater Manchester for 25 years. Throughout that time, I have fought for the people of the North West of England on so many fronts. I am now ready to bring the whole weight of that experience to fighting for the communities of the Makerfield constituency and would be privileged to be given that opportunity.
At the start of the 2010s, Erewash Borough Council had 6 street cleaning vehicles and a separate, on-foot town centre sweeping team
After 2019, this was cut down to just two street cleaning vehicles - so fewer regular routes, and no dedicated town centre sweeping
Access to our colleges and universities shouldnโt just be for a wealthy few.
Thatโs why Iโm bringing back maintenance grants for those who need them most.
Labour is ambitious for all our young people, no matter their background. Iโm putting our values into action.
Thank you @adamthompson111 and team, for joining our fabulous @SSCCTY reps and SMILERs today @LadywoodKH! It was a pleasure to welcome you to our wonderful school.
Congratulations to our hard-working members who were awarded 'Best Twinned Team' at Labour Conference. We mobilised dozens of H&FB activists and sent them to key marginals such as @ErewashLabour during the general election, making a crucial difference in six Labour victories!

Residents across Derby and Derbyshire may be concerned following the protests, disorder and violence that we have seen happening across the country.
I have been reassured by Derbyshire Constabulary that they have a policing operation in place for every eventuality and will continue to closely monitor the situation. The Force will be reviewing information and intelligence to ensure that any policing and community safety response is both swift and proportionate.
During these challenging times across our nation, I want to assure residents that I am working very closely with the Force and will continue to work with all key partners, MPs, councils and community organisations to keep our residents safe.
I would like to thank our police force and emergency services for all that they do in our communities and behind the scenes to protect us from harm.
Now, more than ever, we must stand together.

Weโre scrapping this pointless law and creating a new partnership between businesses, unions and working people through our New Deal.
Repealing this legislation is part one of our plan to reset industrial relations so theyโre fit for a modern economy.
