Preservation shouldn’t mean freezing a building in time. The best way to protect historic character is to keep it economically viable.
When guidelines become so rigid that reinvestment doesn’t pencil, we unintentionally undermine the very character we’re trying to protect — creating vacancy and decline instead of vitality.
Respect the past. Build for the future. That’s how downtowns survive.
