During 2020-2023 when NZ First was NOT in government:

“Labour left us:
· A crumbling, underfunded, overwhelmed Health System.

An education system that had seen:
· a record number of children not attending school
· a record number of children failing basic standards
· an unmanageable number of schools without adequate classrooms, and

A Defence Force that had lost more than a third of its personnel over Labour’s three years.

An undermanned Police Force:
· haemorrhaging officers to Australia,
· massive shortages in recruitment,
· massive increases in crime, and
· youth ramraids and violence that was simply out of control.

Gang numbers that ballooned over the three years.

A cost-of-living crisis.

A housing crisis with skyrocketing prices and unprecedented numbers living in emergency hotels. Remember the Labour promise 100,000 new Kiwi-Build houses in ten years?

They left us a rate of child poverty even higher than when in 2021 Jacinda Ardern made herself the 'Minister of Child Poverty'.

A mental health system that had seen more and more young people suffering with no help.

Crumbling infrastructure around the country with no plan, no funding, and no idea.
An unprecedented, uncontrollable level of immigration - over 133,000 entering in 2023 alone.

And during Covid, Labour left large numbers of people ostracised, demonised, shutdown and shutout, ignored and cancelled - all because those people fought for their right to say 'no, we disagree.'

And they are hoping we have all forgotten about all of that.”

👀 NZ First candidate George Ngatai stands down amid claims he was blackmailed

A New Zealand First candidate is stepping down amid claims he faced blackmail and extortion threats over personal messages he shared with rival party leaders.

George Ngatai QSM says he has referred the alleged threats to police and is disappointed he won’t contest the Papakura seat in November’s... general election.

Ngatai is a former Vision New Zealand candidate and Destiny Church member who owns Radio Aotearoa.

His wife Raewyn Bhana QSM is a Manurewa Community Board member who went public last week with allegations of electoral fraud in last year’s local body elections.

Social media and radio podcast host Martel Wikeepa – known as Shubz – has worked at the radio station voluntarily for some time but was suspended this week after an apparent employment dispute.

In recent days, Shubz has posted messages on his Shubz Live platform that show Ngatai messaged Act leader David Seymour and Opportunities leader Qiulae Wong earlier this year about possible meetings.
It’s understood the meetings never occurred.

Ngatai alleges Shubz messaged him this month asking to be paid for his work and for his show to receive another time slot. It’s claimed he threatened to unleash the “nuclear option” if his request was denied.

“Say ka kite to parliament & all your money you spent,” one of the alleged messages reads.
“Will give you one week to respond if we get nothing will take our own action.”

Ngatai responded that he would “not be threatened” and the pair should meet in person to discuss the matter.

Shubz allegedly responded, “Me saying i can tank your campaign aint a threat thats the truth [sic]”.

The messages were released this week on the Shubz Live Facebook page with a series of social media posts.

The Herald has sought comment from Shubz.

In a statement today announcing he was standing down, Ngatai said he owed an explanation to his supporters for an “incredibly difficult decision”.

He said the messages to Seymour and Wong were sent during a “period of considerable uncertainty” about whether he would stand as a NZ First candidate.

“It was personally disappointing and, during that period, I considered what other options might exist.”
No meetings were held, Ngatai claimed.

“What I did not anticipate was that private communications from that period would subsequently become part of a much more serious dispute.

“Over recent weeks, communications were received which we interpreted as linking demands for money with the prospect of private information being released publicly.

“That changed the situation completely.”

What he initially regarded as a disagreement involving Radio Aotearoa was no longer simply a broadcasting or commercial dispute, Ngatai said.

“The nature of the communications caused us to become concerned about whether we were dealing with potential harassment, blackmail or extortion.

“Those are serious words and I use them carefully.”
He had filed a police complaint and handed relevant evidence to authorities.

Ngatai said his wife had also faced threats after going public with allegations of vote rigging and stolen ballot papers in the Manurewa Local Board election. She had also contacted police and the Serious Fraud Office.

Ngatai said the pair would not be bullied into silence “because someone threatens reputational, political or commercial consequences”.
However, he was standing down so his candidacy did not become a distraction for the party that had placed its faith in him.

“I am not prepared to do that to the party.

“I recognise the confidence that Rt Hon Winston Peters, our party president, and New Zealand First subsequently placed in me. I do not take that confidence lightly.

“Sometimes an apology is demonstrated by the decision you make rather than the words you use.

“For me, stepping aside means accepting responsibility for the circumstances I can control, dealing properly with those I cannot, and ensuring the party is not required to carry a distraction that belongs with me.”

Ngatai said the party deserved to campaign on its record, policies and vision for the country “without continually answering questions about circumstances involving one candidate. That is why I am stepping aside”.

He thanked his supporters and was “deeply sorry” he wouldn’t finish the campaign alongside them.

In a statement, NZ First said: “Mr Ngatai offered his resignation as a candidate and we accepted it. We wish him well”.

Why are New Zealand families paying so much at the checkout?

New Zealand First says part of the problem is a grocery market dominated by Foodstuffs and Woolworths.

Its 2026 policy would break Foodstuffs into two nationwide cooperatives, separating Pak’nSave from New World and Four Square, with the aim of creating stronger competition. It also proposes tougher Commerce Commission powers and stronger protections for Kiwi suppliers.
As someone who has spent decades in business, I know what real competition does.

It forces businesses to sharpen up, justify their prices and work harder for the customer.

For me, this is about one simple thing.
More competition. Better prices. A fairer deal for New Zealand families.
