From the walk to the clubhouse to the handshake on 18, there’s no wasted step at Chechessee Creek Club. You won’t find any visual deception, hidden hazards or dramatic elevation at this Coore & Crenshaw design. You won’t hear much outside of chirping birds and well-struck irons echoing through the pines. You won’t find a signature hole, but you also won’t play a skip. You get a golf course that flows seamlessly together, with tee shots that ask simple questions and greens that demand precise answers. You’ll find southern charm at its finest, from the wraparound porch to the dangerously smooth Creek Teas to the unforgettable fried chicken dinner. Put it all together and you have one of the most understated and delightful walks in all of golf.
108 Broken Tee Society members came to South Carolina from Seattle, California, Texas, Canada and beyond on Monday to take the walk. The verdict: 36 wasn't nearly enough. At a time when bigger, bolder and louder seems to be the norm, it’s a potent reminder that small greens and a quiet place to sit still with your friends is hard to beat.

Hole of the Day
The Lido
No. 18 - par 4 - 424 yards
Inspired by Alister MacKenzie's winning design from the Country Life contest in 1914, the "Home" hole at the Lido has multiple fairways separated by a sandy waste area. The left fairway is fairly easy to reach but leaves a long approach. The long-carry options on the right offer the prospect of a kick down through huge, manufactured channels. The green is a chaotic marvel.
The Lido Club
1917 - CB MacDonald
2023 - Tom Doak
Combining modern technology and plans from a century ago, Doak & Co. have attempted to bring back a golf course long dead.
Originally on Long Island, Lido was lost to the Great Depression and WW2. The Keiser’s decided they wanted to bring it back to life in Wisconsin.
Today a flat piece of sand is now an extremely accurate recreation of this lost treasure. It’s big and bold and unlike anything else.
The templates are amazing and the routing is curious, but faithful to the original. You have to imagine the original hotel and land to make sense of it.
It’s a must play. It will bring about various emotions, but it’s truly one of the boldest courses ever made, full of daring asks and incredible features. An amazing achievement.
Sand Valley #91/Top 100
Coore & Crenshaw
Fantastic walk around the original course at Sand Valley Resort.
A wonderful routing through some of the sandiest soil you can find, it provides constant shot variation and challenge, but also plenty of funnels to add to the fun factor.
Throw in some $1 tacos and ice cream sandwiches and it’s a perfect day!
Another C&C home run.
