WW2 / Battle of Anzio veteran - UK expat voting rights - Italy Representative for Italy Star Association. Oldest @uklabour member. Infrequent twitter user
Today, 101 year old WW2 veteran Harry Shindler OBE, who landed at Anzio in 1944, became the last person to sign our condolence book before The Queen’s funeral. Harry lives 3 hours from Rome, so, thanks to our Defence Attache Col Matt Smith, the book travelled to him.
Back in London briefly, great to catch up again with 101 year old WW2 veteran, Harry Shindler, yesterday as he celebrated the success of his campaign to restore votes to British expats. Harry now lives in Italy, not far from Pescara. He took part in the Anzio landings in 1944
With Harry Shindler (102) who has flown in from his home in Italy to celebrate the passage of the 'Votes for Life' legislation for ex-pats to which he gave such tireless support.
He is also the last known survivor of the Anzio landings that began the liberation of Italy in 1944.
We have our votes back.
Very pleased that after many years of campaigning Britons who live overseas will no longer lose their vote after 15 years.
Many thanks to all who supported this important change to the law, which now has Royal Assent.

British citizens living abroad can vote in UK Parliamentary elections. They can't vote in UK local elections or elections to the devolved assemblies. Find out more about overseas voters in our briefing: https://t.co/DwWpRTkguC
🇮🇹 Tomorrow is #festadellaliberazione in #Italy, remembering the sacrifices made to win our freedoms in WW2.

🗳️🇬🇧 Britons are getting closer to being able to vote after 15 years overseas
As I told @lisaocarroll “I am delighted and pleased this is nearly over. We are a democracy, but not a complete democracy while we didn’t have the right to vote.”

Easily missed on page 48 of the Budget, but good news for all those that have campaigned for the restoration of voting rights for Brits abroad.
Thanks @HarryShindler for phoning me with the good news. 1/3
Mr Shindler, it should be explained, fought in the Battle of Anzio, has lived in Italy since 1982 & has been campaigning for this for a long time. He is also 99 years old.
It's very good news that the UK's 15 year voting rule is ending as part of #Budget2021.
We fought to defend our right to vote in WW2 and now we will get to use it.
This is an important day for freedom.

There are two other cases on the same issue of UK citizens and EU citizenship after Brexit pending:
1 @HarryShindler and others (where the lawyer is @julienfouchet1) - Case T-198/20
2 Price and others (Case T-231/20), where interim measures have been requested.
Brexit law: @eyejosh lodges case in the EU courts on the issue of UK citizens retaining EU citizenship. Here's a summary of the arguments. EU Council will likely argue that the challenge lacks standing, and on the merits that only nationals of Member States can be EU citizens.
