So let me add some more context 🔻

SARS taxes the ‘profit before tax’ for companies, so if you look at the income statement, you’ll see that salaries paid out reduces taxable income for a company.

🟡Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)

𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 - 𝗖𝗢𝗚𝗦 = 🟡Gross Profit

- 🟠 Salaries

= PROFIT BEFORE TAX (PBT)

- 🔴Tax Expense

=🟣 Net income

This shifts the tax liability to the employee where they have to pay personal income tax. So, paying yourself a dividend, too, might not be the best move.

As a business owner,

you should always pay yourself a salary first up until your personal marginal tax bracket catches up to the corporate tax rate.

Only when your personal income exceeds the point where your personal tax bracket is higher than 41.6% does declaring dividends become a viable strategy to limit your tax liability.

At that point, one should freeze their salary and then take any extra business profits as dividends to cap the tax rate at 41.6%

You can also use debt strategically.

I was writing exposes for @News24 when SASCOC maliciously
