@SeaTacAAAC This passport control line is a disgrace. Surely you can anticipate how many passengers were arriving this afternoon. I have a 3 hour layover and will likely not make the flight. This is gross incompetence.
“I believe that the enterprise of western civilization is consummated each time a soul is saved from the dark night of fanatical obscurantism. It is consummated whenever one soul is released from the pessimism that truth is unobtainable, or not worth the trouble to obtain it.”
“Patriotism is civic friendship. Patriotism is the link between justice and friendship in its purest or transpolitical form. . . Those who see each other as utterly alien cannot be fellow citizens.”
@PMCharlesTupper You might very well think so; I couldn't possibly comment. (IYKYK)
I have heard a rumor that Steve's main Twitter account got hacked and stolen, and he hasn't been able to get it back. (X is no help at all.)
Many lamented that Gordon Wood died before the Semiquincentennial. As it turns out, his first posthumous publication is an essay entitled “The Declaration of Independence.” And it’s the most distilled argument for propositional nationhood I’ve ever read.
A Tour de force from @Rickersam3:
"the American project is to embody the truths listed in the Declaration within our specific nation, with a particular constitution, laws, and political practices. Above all, the American project has been to show against would-be aristocrats and kings that it is possible to create and maintain such a nation."
"Are the critics of creedal nationalism, Left and Right, all wrong? Perhaps the better question isn’t if we have been a creedal nation in the past, but if we are still a creedal nation today: do we still believe in these truths? Can we? That second question—whether we can or not—raises a different kind of issue."
