A few weeks ago, my dear friend @HarshNarayan85 reached out to ask if I'd compère an event he and his family had organised in remembrance of his late grandfather, Padma Vibhushan Pt. Ram Narayan. Pt. Ram Narayan almost single-handedly established the Sarangi as a full-fledged solo classical instrument on the most prestigious concert platforms across the globe, giving it the recognition it truly deserved. Panditji's son and disciple Pt. Brij Narayan, his grandson and disciple Harsh Narayan, and his disciple Smt. Vasanti Shrikhande (@vasanti_sarangi) paid him a musical tribute through pure classical music on the Sarangi.

It was a privilege and an honour that Harsh and his family felt I could be part of this tribute, held under the aegis of Swaranandi. Needless to say, with my stomach in knots, having never compèred before, I stood before an audience of around a hundred people, and found my own small way to pay tribute to a legendary maestro. I’m deeply saddened by the passing on of one of the greatest Sarangi Maestros that the entire Indian Subcontinent has ever witnessed- Pandit Ram Narayan ji. He hailed from the illustrious ’Kirana Gharana’ and was the recipient of the prestigious Padma Vibhushan.
Apart from being one of the greatest Solo Sarangi players of the world performing Hindustani Classical Music, his contribution to Indian Cinematic music is also extremely exceptional; lending his hypnotic sarangi to historical soundtracks from ‘Mughal-e-Azam to Madhumati, Pakeeza and countless more..
In addition to his genius as a phenomenal artist, he was a very kind and gentle soul. His smile was infectious & he personified humility.. The Sarangi is one of my favourite instruments & Pandit ji knew how to make it Sing like no other…
May his soul rest in peace & my sincere condolences to his beloved family…🙏🖤
