Jo Nagai was raising swallowtail butterflies at his home in Kobe, Japan, when he noticed something odd. The ones he had looked after as caterpillars seemed to recognize him. Wild butterflies fled. His didn't.
He was in second grade. He wrote a four-page letter to Dr. Martha Weiss, an entomologist at Georgetown University who had studied whether moths could retain memories through metamorphosis. He asked if she could help him design a version of her experiment for butterflies.
She said yes.
Using a muscle therapy device, Jo trained caterpillars to associate the scent of lavender with a mild vibration. When the caterpillars became butterflies, 70 per cent of them still avoided the lavender. Their brains had been completely rebuilt during metamorphosis. The memory survived anyway.
Then he bred them.
The offspring, which had never been trained, also avoided lavender. So did their grandchildren. Without ever experiencing the vibration, two generations of butterflies inherited an aversion to a scent their grandmother had been taught to fear.
Jo documented it all in a 33-page research paper and presented his findings at the International Congress of Entomology in Kobe in 2024. He was 10.
A second grader wrote a letter to a Georgetown professor, and together they found evidence that butterflies can pass memories down through generations.

There's an old joke about a policeman stopping a drunk who is searching for his lost car keys under a streetlamp.
He dropped them somewhere two blocks away, but the light is better over here.
Fighting marxism with superpacs, NGOs, and social media is a great way to lose slowly.
Why?
Because the real war is upstream.
The real war is fought in the culture.
People show up to politics, show up to the voting booth, show up to social media, with their opinions already formed by the shows they grew up watching, and the books they grew up reading.
The culture war for the mind of young Elon Musk was not won by a hundred million dollar superpac — it was won by a twelve-dollar Heinlein novel.
Because of that victory, the tech right understands the value of rockets.
But it has yet to fully grasp the value of Heinleins.
Big Tech stood by silently while the "Big Five" Manhattan-based publishing industry withered on the vine and its corpse was skinsuited by marxists.
And now, decades later, they are trying to build AI and go to space, while scratching their heads wondering why no one outside El Segundo and the Bay Area seems to understand their vision of the future, and just wants to steal all their stuff to pay for more Pepsi and Doritos.
You can stare all day and the rock-bottom awful marxist DEI slop that emerges from Hollywood and Manhattan these days and think that there's no way the left can win with this garbage.
But armchair warriors discuss tactics, while professional soldiers study logistics and supply.
No matter how bad woke media becomes, creating an alternative still costs money.
If a right-wing author has to self-publish, pay for his own cover artist, and market his own novels, while some lefty MFA from Bryn Mawr can pen a novel about having a lesbian affair with her professor's wife, and get a six figure "fellowship" for selling a few copies, and I wish I was making that up, then what this means is that left wing art is effectively free, or negative cost, to make.
Currently, the culture war is being fought on behalf of the right by broke middle class writers and artists, who have to fund themselves, bootstrap style, while their enemies own all the institutions and distribution networks.
It doesn't matter how poor your enemies' tactics are, if your soldiers have to buy their own uniforms and rifles.
When they lose, and they will unless the Tech Right starts helping, then the marxists are going to throw you in prison and take all your shit.
Don't want that to happen?
Fine.
Then you have to actually become a conservative, instead of just playing one on social media because you don't wanna pay more taxes.
You have to actually believe in the cause and contribute to the fight.
And it starts with art, culture, and stories.
Must watch clip right here.
2019. Ted Lieu and former Democrat Congresswoman Jane Harman participate in a panel during the annual DEF CON conference.
DEF CON is the world's largest hacker convention. Hackers, computer security experts, intelligence community members, and many others get together to discuss ideas, threats, and to hold hacking contests.
Jane Harman served nine terms in Congress, sat on all the major security committees, and was the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee. She also is President of the Woodrow Wilson think tank and sits on numerous security advisory boards.
Harman: The 2020 election is not secure. At least a third of all voting machines are totally vulnerable.
Lieu and Harman were there because DEF CON had recently held a "voting village" where hackers attempted (and succeeded) in hacking into our voting machines. Teenagers were even able to hack into some machines.
Ted Lieu urged the hackers to meet with media and to speak out about how vulnerable our voting machines are. Lieu said the public needed to know how vulnerable our elections are.
Lieu also criticized McConnell for not passing election security legislation that would require paper trails for all votes. 😂
Democrats and the media regularly spoke about the vulnerabilities of our elections, all the way up until the 2020 election. Immediately after the 2020 election it became forbidden to question the security of our elections. They all just began reciting the talking point "It was the most secure election ever."
So the way to choose who will represent the people of South Carolina in the US Senate is to choose one of Lindsey Graham's siblings in order to "pay tribute" to him? That's not really the reason we have a Senate.
Neither party even pretends to care about what voters want. Hey: Lindsey Graham died 6 seconds ago: we picked his obscure, experience-free sister to send to the US Senate and didn't even pretend to hear if you want that!
But don't you understand?
There was a way. There was always a way.
We had it within our grasp, because we had already grasped it. The childhoods that you and your daughter had were available because you and your daughter had them.
All that the Boomers, and their parents, the eldest of the post WW2 generations, had to do was...
Nothing.
Just live in the paradise that their ancestors won for them, and make the minimum, the bare minimum, of effort that would have been required to actually sustain it.
That's all.
Just keep things the way they were.
But they couldn't handle that. Their fathers and grandfathers, the heroes that won WW2, made them jealous.
They wanted to be heroes, too.
So, for the sake of their own egos, they had to become Social Justice Warriors. They had to be Champions of Progress and Change.
They had to see the world they inherited as a pile of problems to be solved, rather than a pile of solutions to be cherished and preserved.
So they could feel like they were doing something important.
Almost all of the elder generations, even the ones who call themselves conservative and vote republican, are, in truth, socialist liberal progressives. Because they looked at paradise, and wanted to fix it instead of protect it.
That's why the "republican" option was Reagan, the gun-ban guy, the social-welfare guy, the kiss-up-to-the-commies guy, the amnesty-for-foreign-invaders guy.
Reagan, the Hollywood liberal, the Obama of the 80s, instead of Joe McCarthy, Barry Goldwater, and Pat Buchanan.
Teens can't have a summer job because elders had to be Third-World Compassion Heroes, and give us Hart-Cellar and eleventy-billion barbarians who don't care about civilization, but will work cheap.
Teens can't have a car because elders had to be Climate Emergency Heroes and give us emissions control laws and Cash for Clunkers.
Teens can't have safe schools to learn at, because elders had to Anti-Racist Heroes and made it illegal to exclude violent thugs from our school districts. Just because those thugs generally come color-coded for your convenience.
Teens can't have safe public spaces to hang out in, because elders had to be Compassion for the Underclass Heroes, and release violent savages into society, again and again, with a lecture and a slap on the wrist.
Teens can't have a healthy economy to inherit, because elders had to be Equality Heroes and make sure every corporation that actually did anything useful was punished for not being Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive enough to suit the ideal universe that exists only in their heads.
Teens can't have dates, because elders had to be Anti-Sexist Heroes, and let feminists spend forty years diminishing the social value of men, until you had to a be a billionaire rockstar adventurer to avoid being an unsexy loser by default.
Teens can't even be fit, healthy, and pretty, because elders had to be Sex Equality Heroes, and move women into the corporate workforce in droves, leaving children to be fed by corporate industrial slop factories.
Teens can't have sane, well-adjusted, unspoiled girlfriends and wives, because elders had to be Champions of Sexual Freedom, and normalize unlimited female promiscuity, all in exchange for the largely unfulfilled promise of a little unshaven free-love yeti snatch.
And worst, of all, the crowning irony, the final dead hamster in the water pipe, is that all of this would be fixable, perhaps in three to five election cycles...
Except.
Except the elders don't understand that any of this of this is happening.
They haven't had a child in the household since 1997. They haven't looked for an entry-level job since 1973. They haven't gone on a date since 1981. They haven't been laid off... ever.
They are safe with their paid-off houses and their investments and their pensions from 45 years at the same company and their social security and their medical plans.
It's affecting the youngest generations first and worst. While the elders sit on their cruise ship, surveying the short with binoculars, wondering who all these ragged distressed looking people standing on the shore are.
And why they are holding signs that say "HELP", "THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT", and "YOU STOLE THE LIFE I WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE".
Then they shrug, conclude that these must be the whiny losers, and everyone further inland is probably just fine, and everything is fine, because they fixed everything and they are all heroes, and the Summer of Love was the end of the Problematic Era of History and the beginning of the Great Enlightenment.
And when I am 74 years old, and the elders are all safely tucked into their cemetery plots, I will be torn apart by an angry mob for having white hair, and therefore being "one of them".
And the mob will not care that I didn't get to cast a vote until 1992, for the Man Who Predicted All Of This.
He called it the "giant sucking sound".
Which is apt because it's why everything sucks now.
The most credentialed woman I’ve ever seen once called a headline sexist for saying men were stronger than women. She’d worked for NASA, the UN, Harvard, and Oxford. I said “It doesn’t mean all women, it’s a generalization.” She said “Generalizations are problematic,” so I responded “All generalizations, or just some of them?”
Anyone who knows about Clarence Thomas dissents knows they are almost always short and sweet.
The fact that he wrote a 91 page dissent for this monstrosity of a decision on birthright shows how absolutely infuriated he is.
Read the Kavanaugh concurrence
“In my view, the Executive Order does not violate the Fourteenth Amendment. But the Order does contravene a federal statute, 8 USC 1401(a). Congress could — consistent with the Fourteenth Amenedment — amend 1401(a) or other use enact new legislation establishing exceptions to birthright citizenship for children born to foreign citizens unlawfully or temporarily in the country. But Congress has not yet done so.”
Several ways forward here given the choice of Roberts/Barrett to nullify the 14th Amendment and extra-constitutionally replace it with their own language:
1) Nullification. States issue birth certificates, and they can just stop issuing them to non-citizens. Roberts/Barrett can deal with the fallout and litigate each birth individually.
2) Pack the court. If Robert wants to be a politician who writes laws instead of a judge, then he can fight with 10 more unelected legislators in robes.
3) Deny entry to all pregnant foreigners.
4) Deny entry to all female foreigners.
5) Require sterilization of all foreign visitors prior to entry.
6) Dissolution of the Union. A nation which can’t even restrict who gets to be a citizen isn’t a nation.
7) Amend the Constitution. This is pointless, because once a judge decides he can rewrite the Constitution at will (as Roberts and Barrett did today), the actual text is meaningless. But this is what most GOP politicians gravitate towards because they are useless.
If you think all these options are not great, understand that that is what happens when unelected judges decide that they are in charge of the country and get to write its laws.
2009. Obama announces $13 billion from the Recovery Act will be used for high speed rail projects across the country.
The high speed rail/money laundering scam goes back many years.
Imagine if the media looked into anything Obama had done as much as it has reported on the Reflecting Pool.
Libs: If Jesus was around you would call him "woke." The Bible is akshully liberal
Texas: Ok, lets have children read it
Libs: NO that'll make them fascist
There are certain philosophical principles that destroy any high-level civilization which holds them.
One of them is the idea that human life isn't precious.
But the other is that human life is so precious that no attack on property, reputation, trust, or peace of mind can ever justify violent retaliation.
In other words, any society where there's no such thing as "fighting words" is doomed.
Why?
Because the moment you place violence off limits, then people who wish to harm others, who take joy in harming others, have now been given a free pass to do so in absolute safety.
If all of your property is worth less than a hair on my head, then I can steal or destroy all of your property, because you cannot stop me without harming a hair on my head.
If your entire reputation is worth less than a hair on my head, then I can dedicate my life to slandering and character assassinating you, because you cannot stop me without harming a hair on my head.
If all of your peace of mind is worth less than a hair on my head, then I can terrorize you night and day, because you cannot stop me without harming a hair on my head.
If all of your trust is worth less than a hair on my head, then I can betray that trust over and over again, until no one trusts anyone, because you cannot stop me without harming a hair on my head.
And if I can destroy all of these things, then enough people like me can destroy civilization itself, because civilization is made of property, peace, trust, and reputation.
Why are there no civilizations without violence?
Because without violence, there is no civilization.
🇧🇷 A Brazilian judge just sentenced two parents to prison for homeschooling their daughters.
Their crime, according to the court: "intellectual neglect" and not teaching state-approved "gender and sex education."
The girls are 15 and 11. They speak multiple languages and are both accomplished pianists.
An independent psychologist found zero signs of neglect. The prosecutor recommended acquittal.
The judge convicted them anyway. 50 days behind bars.
It's the first time in Brazilian history parents have been criminally prosecuted for homeschooling.
The mother's response: "I cannot conceive a more dictatorial state than the one that wants me in jail because I chose to exercise my right to direct the education and upbringing of my daughters."
Their case is now headed to appeal.
