10,000 Hours of Crypto Advice in 5 Minutes
Back in 2017, a friend from university had called me with an idea. He wanted to start an escrow company on a blockchain I had never heard of. The technology had a gaping hole he believed we could fill, preventing fraud and giving back to the ecosystem that had rewarded him early on. It wasn’t just a business opportunity; it was a chance to contribute to something bigger. This kick-started my journey in cryptocurrencies and opened a door to a whole new world. From there, I began collecting coins, diving deeper into the mechanics of blockchain technology, and exploring different ecosystems. Later, when NFTs emerged on Cardano, I found myself drawn to the creativity and innovation they represented. What started as a simple idea from a friend grew into a passion that would reshape my career and perspective entirely.
Between 2017 and 2020, things moved quickly once I embraced the crypto space. We formed a company, struck deals, and soon enough, I was traveling to conferences, something I had always wanted to do. Networking became an integral part of my life, and I started meeting people who were just as passionate and curious as I was about the potential of crypto. Our company quickly gained trust in the community, and our proposals started finding real success. One of our biggest achievements during this time was raising $500,000 USD in DASH tokens to fund the Great American Pilgrimage, a documentary series featuring Stephen Baldwin and Max Keiser traveling across the U.S. exploring public opinions on cryptocurrency. It was a groundbreaking project, and through it, we secured over $6.8 million USD in Dash.
By early 2020, the world was in turmoil. Like many others, I felt the weight of uncertainty, and it pushed me to act. I made the decision to leave the family business, a place where I had worked for over 15 years, where I knew everyone, and had built a solid reputation. At the time, I had two kids, a wife, and a mortgage, all while living in one of the most expensive cities in the world. It was terrifying. My wife’s highly successful catering business was down 95%, and it really felt like the walls were closing in on us. The fear of failure, especially with the world around me crumbling due to the pandemic, was overwhelming. But deep down, I knew I couldn’t stay in a place that no longer served me. The major change was scary, but the idea of staying stuck was much worse.
Looking back at those early days, I’m amazed at how quickly I was thrust into such an important role in the crypto world. I was brand new to crypto and completely out of my depth, yet I knew that saying yes to this opportunity had set me on a path that would forever change my life. I’m thankful for the courage I found to jump in headfirst, despite having no idea where it would lead.
Of course, not all my ventures were successful. I spent over two years building an auction house, only to fail spectacularly. But that's another story for another time. The key takeaway is this: don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty in areas you're passionate about. Failure is part of the journey, and it's better to try and fail than never try at all.
