@scientificecon@Handre I think Singapore adopted the Malaysian constitution with the exception of property rights in order to capture land value for the state, well and to build more purposefully, I suppose.
@rorysutherland@Insight_hunters A lot of people don't have the wherewithal.
Using recent selling prices as a starting point and using some other data to subtract the improvements to some level of accuracy, and if the first year's tax level is low enough, perhaps they can do it in... placing my bet...18 months
@matty__ldn@rorysutherland That is right but what of it, Matty? I think you are just being difficult for no reason. BTW, LVT only would mean no pollution taxes, which is surely daft. Oddly, it might mean no industry at all as people would want the plants shut down instead.
@rorysutherland On council tax and LVT:
LVT is best as a distributional national tax. Taxing Mayfair and keeping the money local simply passes the money from rich neighbour to rich neighbour.
Council tax is basically a poll tax, which is a good way to fund local services.
Police officer tells a man in Leeds he's being arrested “Because you called Muhammed a rapist and a killer”.
Agents of the British state deploying physical force in defence of Islamic blasphemy laws.
'The Unknown Warriors' (2006) is a collection of WWII veteran's views on modern Britain gathered via newspaper ad. So what did WWII veterans think of the 2006 UK? They hated it; 134 responses were negative vs only 6 positive (plus 31 N/A and 13 neutral). Excerpts below.
@Con_Tomlinson Impoverishing Britons that rely on the state pension is the sort of policy that keeps immigration restrictionists out of power. The triple lock can't go on forever but choosing to focus on it is a tell.
🚨BREAKING: UK GOVERNMENT TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUTUBE ALGORITHM
This is pure authoritarianism
Keir Starmer's/Andy Burnham's Government is set to control the YouTube algorithm by LAW stipulating that they must push "APPROVED CONTENT" to UK Citizens
And independent voices who criticise the government will be pushed to the back of the queue making it harder for people to find
YouTube has acknowledged this is happening
This must be stopped
@woke8yearold No. Imbalances in China when accommodated by an open capital account in e.g. The US, creates imbalances there. Most who understand this, like US banks, profit from the imbalance, it is not a noble lie.
@GordonGChang He is wrong about bilateral tariffs. As Pettis has said, or something like it...goods are fungible, they can pit-stop in a third country with a lower tariff. Suppose the tariff on China were 100% and 10% elsewhere, the effective tariff rate on China would be closer to 10 than 100
@Jonthemon6@BurnsideWasTosh Oh my word. But I have to say, the other chap's 70 years x .6 seems to be a bad example, surely the interval between generations, says 30 years, would be the right multiple. If so, a trust would pay less tax than inheritance. In any case, Stevenson was especially dreadful there.
@jodymcintyre_ QinetiQ has annual revenue of something like two billion pounds. 13 million is less than one percent of that. And it might have been a multi-year deal, so much less than one percent of sales. If Israel was his only customer, sure that would be interesting but this is not.
@ben_shore@jfwduffield Competing on taxes is a recipe for corporate subsidies and entrenching economic lunacy. Despite these major shortcomings, perhaps it makes some sense in continental sized countries. Local taxes should be poll taxes not corporate taxes.
