CENTRAL CONTRACTS
There is, increasingly, a sense of futility in dissecting the central contracts awarded by Pakistan cricket, futility born not of exasperation alone, but of sheer bewilderment.

The decisions continue to oscillate between the absurd and the inexplicable, birthed perhaps of incompetence, possibly of mischief, or simply of the unique bureaucratic alchemy that defines Pakistan’s cricketing technocracy.

That Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan find themselves demoted to Category B is, at some level, is understandable. Recent performances suggest a recalibration was due. That, however, is not the story.

The story lies in the daylight brazenness of other inclusions. In decisions that require a certain boldness to make, and perhaps a certain insulation from consequence.

Take Ahmad Danial, a prodigy from the Lahore Qalandars system. He is now a centrally contracted cricketer. One must assume his potential is prodigious. On paper, however, the trail is less emphatic. Picked for a Zimbabwe tour, injured before playing. Recalled for Bangladesh, and again for Australia with the Shaheens—injured again, this time in Darwin. And now, a Category D contract.

Shadab Khan, meanwhile, lands directly in Category B. This, despite a return to the national side that defied cricketing logic. Then came another injury, and then surgery. Somehow, none of this mattered. He had appeared in 8 T 20 Internationals on 2024-25.

Elsewhere, Noman Ali (36) and Sajid Khan (34), who have between them taken 70 Test wickets in 4 matches at averages of 13.30 and 19.29 respectively, find themselves in Category C. Statistical merit, it seems, is no longer of any value.

Shan Masood—Test captain, 602 runs this season, two hundreds, two fifties—is demoted to Category D. A captain, then, now placed on equal contractual footing with Salman Mirza and Ahmad Danial.

And Haris Rauf? Promoted. The rationale, if it exists, is not immediately visible in his recent numbers.

Fakhar Zaman has played 1 ODI & four T20 Internationals this year and remains unfit; he is also in Category B.

Hasan Ali, three T20 Internationals, also in Category B.

Saud Shakeel, 691 Test runs this season, stays in Category C.

Patterns emerge. Some franchises—one or two, specifically seem to have found a way in. Their fingerprints are not hard to trace. Call it favouritism, nepotism, incompetence or the more uncomfortable possibility: dishonesty.

Pakistan cricket finds itself in unfamiliar company, toward the foot of every table that matters. And with choices like these, one wonders: are we still slithering, or have we already bottomed out?
