Today, we remember and honor the life, vision and enduring legacy of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, one of Nigeria’s greatest founding leaders. He was Nigeria’s first and only Prime Minister and brutally murdered on January 15, 1966, exactly 60 years ago, today.
Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa delivered Nigeria’s historic Independence speech on October 1, 1960, with grace and vision, and represented the country with distinction at the United Nations and in global diplomacy.
In the early hours of January 15, 1966, Sir Tafawa Balewa was abducted from his residence in Lagos. His body was later discovered, brutally murdered, marking a profound national tragedy that ended the First Republic and altered the course of our history forever.
On this day of remembrance, we honor the Golden Voice of Africa, whose leadership, commitment to unity and dedication to Nigeria’s greatness remain unmatched.
May Allah grant him Aljannar Firdaus and comfort all who still feel the pain of that dark night.
May history honor him forever!
