If you've noticed, most of their sales representatives in the cosmetics section are women from lower income groups or lower middle class families.

They are extremely hard working and good at their job (demos, suggestions), and have been trained to speak and approach customers in English. Which is clearly not their first or preferred language but they try their best.

I was with family at the mall on the weekend.

A sales rep approached my mom and asked her a question in English. Now, English is not my mom's first language either (or second or third). At best, she manages to communicate in tuti-futi English on WhatsApp.

But because she's in a "mall", and has been asked a question by a woman in a "posh looking store", she feels intimidated and compelled to reply in English.

And so you have a scenario.

Where two women - are conversing in a language, neither of them are comfortable in. But they're both probably bilingual and could easily communicate in Hindi or Marathi.

The cosmetics section is just an example, you see it all around. At fine dining restaurants, car showrooms, spas, hotels, Apple stores, or any space that has perceived 'premiumness' associated with it.

The buyer is local. The seller is local. Then why are they speaking in a language that isn't native to either of them?

I can understand switching to English as the second language when someone is from another state / country or not comfortable in the local dialect.

But why is a Marathi woman speaking to my Gujarati mom in English? When they could easily speak in Marathi or Hindi.

Let's please stop this obsession of associating English with 'fancy' or 'posh'. This is not British India of the 1940s anymore.
