Selective leniency—treating only violent crimes as real crime while downplaying unlawful entry—creates a double standard. History shows that when a society treats certain lawbreaking as low-priority or morally excused, more of that behavior follows. Calling detainees “nonviolent moms and asylum seekers” while omitting that the entry itself broke U.S. law is incomplete. Both can be true: they may lack other criminal records and still have committed a federal immigration offense.

A consistent standard treats the immigration violation as what it is rather than redefining it away.
