Just in today’s clinic, I helped prescribe access to three air conditioners. Here’s why:
a $500 air conditioner can help prevent a $15,000 hospital admission for heart failure or heat stroke in these heat waves.
If certain crimes waive your right to an attorney, fair trial, and the presumption of innocence, it incentivizes the state and the powerful to use those crimes as a weapon against the marginalized. You’re arguing for the kind of system that got Emmett Till murdered.
No system in which certain crimes wove your right to due process is progressive. That is an inherently reactionary system that is inherently going to be wielded for reactionary means.
@harrowthefirst1@renegadeapostle Permalink to the current edition of the Wikipedia list of Jesuit cardinals, though it's up for possible deletion so I'd check and archive that page quick https://t.co/PZOpK8HL0Y
@harrowthefirst1@renegadeapostle There's nothing in the rules that says they can't elect someone who's not already a cardinal, so all of them are! There's only two that are cardinal-electors though & 5 total, so they're probably the most electable though (Ferrer is not an elector)
@IronSheikspeare@sonyashea3 ... admittedly if he starts walking now from Rome to the French Way (as in the Camino route) that would also be acceptable, but I really want a confessor travelling with him to make sure to hold him accountable and that he's not just doing it for PR
@IronSheikspeare@sonyashea3 I think we should make him redo the Walk to Canossa instead and remind him that the Papacy does not bow to secular rulers attempting to dictate their politics (also in sackcloth, in midwinter like the original)
His "progressive views" leant cover to the thoroughly conservative institution (even leaving aside the ultra-reactionaries) but he made fascists and Christian nationalists (especially Integralists, i.e. the Catholic edition) mad, so I liked him more than I didn't
@brendanfnjames_@esjesjesj Indeed, it's about as an internal matter as USA presidential elections, which, sure, is elected by & only accountable to the US, but whose domestic politics matter globally (and I'm saying this as an "insider", being a confirmed Catholic and all! still not excommunicated!)
